New to the back packing world and I keep hearing people tell me there is a fairly short loop. My wife and I are looking for an easy to moderate trip (knee problem). I am told about the AT and BMT loop that is not to long. In and out is fine also. I do need to camp and try some new gear. It all works at home but need to test it again.

Any suggestions?

The BMT leaves the AT just below springer, and crosses the AT twice more before it rejoins the AT at Three Forks. So, there are 5 different combinations of of a loop with the BMT near Springer.

Zoom in on the northern half of this map, with the blue lines:

That map is perfect! Per this site: http://www.bmta.org/BMT-ATLoops.htm The total for the BMT-Three Forks-AT return would be 10.6mi. That's a very moderate trail too with some nice scenery.

i was thinking the "bigger" BMT/AT loop-----the more of the figure eight one.............where it starts in springer, and ends in the national park, and then taking the AT back to springer...

figured more long distance type hiking than the shorter loop.....

Thanks for the help guys, we did a 4.45 loop starting at UFSR 42 going back toward Springer and on the BMT back around to the parking lot at 42. It was a great walk. It was a great 28 degrees when we first started and stayed cool.
