What is with that 12" piece of pipe hanging on the side of the tree at the GA/SC at border sign?

Used to be a ledger there for folks to sign. Documentation of your first state. As you've noticed, the tree grew around it, so removing it is problematic.

I cant wait to get up close to it and "Look at it". I see it in trail videos and for some reason it always sticks out. I never said I wasn't a bit nuts but I promise I wont pull it off the tree. Looks like a good place to hang a flagpole...LOL..

Actually it's the GA/NC border. AT doesn't got to SC.

Yes my mistake. No SC on the AT. Either way, seeing it for the first time will be the highlight of my day! Just keep in mind folks that its the little things in life! Next up...talking back to the birds on the trail..

It's a chin up bar. There are several work out stations periodically along the trail.

It is a tool to measure your piece and see if you have what it takes to go all the way!

It's like the sword in the stone - if you can pull it out you become king of the AT.

I'm leaving now!

I don't know why I think so, but I see that as one of the reminiscent things when finished with a thru up in Maine to look back and think about those early one land marks, how tough it was then, and how much further, and far away it became.. all by foot. amazing to think about
