Well guys. I am back at it again. This time I am hiking the Pinhoti Trail. I create video guides or virtual hikes of the trails I hike. The video focus almost exclusively on the trail. What you will see and where. There are trail locations and mile markers for most of the videos. I ended the trail at Bull's Gap.

In this section, I started on top of Flagg Mountain Tower Saturday. I got the view from the tower and head down the dirt road to the trailhead. It is about 1.2 miles on the dirt road from tower to trailhead.

For mile markers I relied on the Pinhoti Trail Alliance e-guide found here: http://www.pinhotitrailalliance.org/al-pocket-guides..html

Here is Pinhoti Trail - Section 1 - Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3WnuBa_OqQ

Hope you guys enjoy. Park 2 should be out by the end of the weekend.

Happy you guys liked it. Next section will be Adams Gap to Bull's. Let me know what I need to see. If there is something cool off trail or anything I need to put in the video for that section. I don't know when I will do this section, but hopefully this month.

Drybones, the cabins look cool. Wish I had checked them out.

Good timing on showing the Section 2 re-route. I had just read about this the other day.

pinhoti trail / section 2.
Update 2~3~16

The northern half of the Section 2 Road Walk has been re~routed.
The Blue Blazes on the power poles for the old route have been removed.
The Blue Blazes for the new route have been added to power poles.
These changes will show up in the Trail Guides as soon as I get my lazy butt down there to re~measure :)

Matt, the old route vs new route map link is one I created after I walked about 1 mile past Old Rockhouse road (the re-route) and then heard from the Coosa Hiker Hostel that there was a re-route. As a purist and for the purpose of documenting the road walk, I turned around. I wish I had known before I headed out, but what can you do.

The re-route is substantially shorter, but I have gotten different figures. I put it in google maps and it seemed to be 1.7 miles shorter, but I have heard others say it is 2.8 miles shorter.

I really enjoyed the re-route. Lake Joy made for a pretty cool stopping point for a snack and a nice view.

One of my favorite trails!

I am enjoying it so far, but the rock garden can ... well you know. I rolled an ankle on a wet rock there. Made the 6-7 miles a nightmare.

Anyways, got back from my last section.

Thank you. I wish I had a better camera and some camera skills, but I make due with what I got.

I couldn't hike the Pinhoti this weekend, but I did manage to make the video from my last hike:

If anyone has done North FS 500 to Jackson Chapel recently, how did you find the trail?

I am been checking out your videos to see which section we want to do, We haven't been out for a long time so we will probably take a few days/nights to do what you do over a weekend. Any recommendations?

when were you at Lower Shoals? I was there end of Feb. I agree, that shelter is a neat little place to hang out...

Love ending a days hiking at the Lower Shoals shelter.
Was there late December of last year.
Arrived at the shelter at 2:30 or so.
Stayed the evening.
About 9:30 some guy walks up and scared the crap out of me.
The only person I saw for 4 days of hiking. Blissful.

I was there April 15. I had started at South FS 500 and made the 8 miles in a little 2 1/2 hrs. I had a great night in the shelter. I didn't get hang out though.

As a weekend warrior, I basically get to camp, set up, try to go to sleep. In the morning, I get up as early as I can (never before sunlight) and start hiking to do the miles I need to do.

Has anyone hiked north of FS 500 to JAckson Chapel recently. Intel would be very helpful.

I use it as well. I created a word document for my hikes based on the Pinhoti Trail Alliance Guide. My miles don't exactly match up because there was a re-route that shaved 1.7 miles by my math off the trail. So all the trail mileage is off by 1.7 miles from the PTA guide.

Well guys. I was intending to do a 29 mile day hike from North FS 500 to Jackson Chapel Rd. I quit after 10 miles due to heat and not being fully recovered from a stomach bug. I was able to get video for the 10 miles, but I think I will wait until I get to Jackson Chapel trailhead to make and publish the video. Sorry.

I was hoping to finish the AL Pinhoti that weekend. I am not sure when I will get back out there now. I know I can't this weekend. I may not be able to next weekend. Hopefully soon, I don't want to leave too much hiking to the fall. There are other trails I would like to do again.

Yea. I was solo. Almost all of my hikes on the Pinhoti have been solo.

Hopefully I get to get back out there and redeem myself sooner rather than later.

Just an update. Some good news and bad news. Let's end with the good news so let's start with the bad news.

The bad news: I recently injured my knees pretty badly while doing a long distance run. It's been 4 days with little improvement. I am hopeful it will heal itself with rest. If in a week it doesn't, I will have choice but to go get it checked out. Hoping for the best, but I am really depressed about it. I am not too hopeful. Walking is painful; hiking would be impossible. This puts all my hiking plans on hold.

The goods news: I bought a garmin fenix 3 hr recently. It creates elevation profiles. It won't be perfect by any means, but it will at least give us an indication of an elevation profile for the trail. I will be taking it with me on all future hikes and I will try to show the elevation profile on all future sections.

Matt65 I think posted an elevation profile for the AL pinhoti. Maybe I can make one for the GA pinhoti.

Assuming my knee heals within a week or two, I will hopefully be able to get back out there in August for at least 1-2 sections. If I get back to normal, I hope to do 2 sections a month from August to whenever I finish the trail.

Another section in the books! I finally crossed into GA.

Maxwell Gap to Jackson Chapel Trailhead. I did it as a 19 mile day hike.

Here is part 1 of the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNeQG8RttWg

Part 2 will come out either later this week or next weekend.

Also, I bought a garmin fenix 3 hr gps. Working on incorporating the data into my videos. I have some of it in this video.

Pinhoti Trail - Section 10 - Part 4 will be fairly short and is nearly done. It will be uploaded later this week.

Your final section I know well as I used the Pinhoti at the northern terminus to connect the BMT to the Pinhoti which took me to Buddy Cove Gap whereupon I left the Pinhoti and used forest road 64 which took me to Three Forks Mt and the East Cowpen trail into the vast Cohutta wilderness, now a burnt crisp.

I was bothered by beaucoup bicyclists on the Georgia section of the Pinhoti. You have any encounters with the rolling pedal potatoes???

I camped right below Buddy Cove directly by the Pinhoti trail on the logging cut. Btw, in normal times there's water down the hill to the left in this pic.

It actually snowed on me and this is on the Pinhoti looking directly up the trail towards Buddy Cove Gap.

Yeah, there were a whole lot of mountain bikers. It is a multi-purpose trail as far as I know. I didn't mind too much. It just came with the trail.
