I'm planning a thru-hike from March 9th till late August this year. I live in Manhattan, with all the accompanying challenges of getting out in the woods for shakedown hikes and gear tests.
Anyone else in the area? What are you doing to combat these challenges?
The AT is quite accessible from NYC, more so than most places.
There's a vast network of trails (including the AT) that converge in Harriman State Park.
Pick up the AT at Bear Mountain and start walking...
I live in Brooklyn. I've been doing lots of hiking/camping upstate via the metro north. I'm planing to do a weekender near the end of February. Shoot me a PM if you want to join or if you'd like some info.

I know for certain there's commuter rail to Peekskill from Grand Central. Form there it's just a few miles on 202 to the Bear Mtn. Bridge. What's a cab cost in Peekskill? Probably a bus running that way, too. Bear Mtn. is a major destination.

I am in Brooklyn, too. I have been practicing on the AT at Harriman and Bear Mountain parks. I find it easiest to take the Short line at Port Authority to Harriman and get off at Arden Valley and hike through the parks to the Bear Mountain Inn where I catch a bus back to Port Authority. It's around 16.8 miles. I've also done it across the Bear Mountain Bridge and hiked to Peekskill (~5 miles) where I got on the Metro North Rail. The road is very narrow and there is a lot of traffic so I don't recommend doing that. (Manitou station a little north could also work but I haven't tried that because the train stops there only a few times a day).

Hi, i'm in the city as well and planning on a 4/13 start from Springer. Bear Mtn area is my usual haunt.

Live in Brooklyn and have section hiker from Virginia to PA from NYC. Some buses in northern PA. Amtrak in southern PA and Virginia. I highly recommend checking out the ATC shuttle list.

I live Hudson County, NJ.... basically near the Lincoln Tunnel. Plan to start on 4/8 going NOBO
