Are their any hikers out there we should be worried about?

If the temp is 0, you should zero. At least that's what I think.

Huh? This is one of the best times to be out, assuming you know what you're doing.

Have to agree with Sarcasm the Elf, winter conditions, especially when it gets very cold and the snow squeaks under the boots, can be remarkably refreshing and fun to be in. Presuming people know what they are doing in it. If they do not believe they have those skills or the proper gear, staying out of those conditions is the wiser decision.

I use to winter hike all the time, even in below zero temps. When you are moving keep moving. When you stop for a break, get your business done then keep moving. When you eat have snacks that you can eat while moving. When you stop for the day have your tent ready for instant setup and your sleeping bag at hand too. If you are going to stay in a shelter have an emergency blanket at hand so when you climb into your bag you can drape that over the bag to keep the wind off of you. You'll figure it out and you will learn to enjoy winter hiking, maybe.....

There are several hikers in Hot Springs and a few possibly in Erwin. One hiker in Hot Springs is really upset by the fact that there is actually snow on the ground:eek:.She had to delete some comments and shut down her Trail journals guest book page after receiving comments about the reality of the situation. Also there were reports of 1-2' snowdrifts above Sam's Gap.More snow is forecast here for Sunday into Monday.Tonight's low temps are supposed to be near 5* with windchills of -5* to -15* in the mountains

What? Snow on the ground? Below zero weather in the mountains? In February?

Who woulda thunk it.

What polar vortex? Looks like regular winter weather to me, warming back up to the 50's by Friday.

Wind chill to -30 or so tonight only in -mid teens today temps expected to drop another 15 as sun sets tonight. Got all the snow shoveled from last night and Wilber the dog refuses to go outside at all. Damn, winter is so much fun!

multi day 35 and rain is the most challenging outdoor weather and cannot be ruled out in the mountains by any schedule/ start time - temps around zero do require some extra thought/ daily planning as any thing that needs to be un frozen has to be kept next to the body

I love the noise of snow squeaking under my boots when its really cold, provided im dressed for it. Yesterday was a nice frosty day. Today...not so much.
