anybody use the Gorilla without the aluminum stays? i'm hoping that pulling them out saves 7 ounces and makes this a very pretty attractive high volume ul pack.

The stay is only 4 ozs. in the 2012 ones. They work so well I bought just the stay to build my homemade pack. Try it with the stay you may like it.

What is your base weight or better total weight carried ? My ULA CDT no frame 18lbs is max for me .

I have a gorilla, and without the frame it is comfortable up to about 20 pounds. Heavier than that, the few extra ounces of the frame earn their keep.

What are you planning that could possibly require a frame? I've carried sleeping bags that are heavier than your full pack. :rolleyes:

Thanks, all. i pretty much max out at 20 pounds, even in the winter... so I think i'll buy one and see. It certainly sounds like I won't want to use the stays three seasons. and it does sound like a wonderful pack. again, thanks! now i just have to be patient. i think they're out of stock!

Oops. Meant to add;

I used a frameless pack previously and found it uncomfortable at 22 lbs and up. The gorilla with frame has excellent load transfer to the hip belt. I have 9-10 lb base in 3 season. So if I take 8 days of food plus water I'm looking at 26-28 lbs start. I also plan some desert hikes in the near future and want the support for 5L of water. Plus you can strip the gorilla down to about 1lb for short trips. The best pack I have owned!

I usually use my Gorilla with the stays but typically I'm carrying 20+ pounds when I'm using it. With lighter loads it should be fine without them I would think, like a larger Murmur.
