View Full Version : Using Tarp Tent on Tent Pads

How much trouble has anyone had pitching a tarp or tarptent on a tent pad? When you cannot use stakes, what do you do and has this ever been an issue on the AT?

Thanks for your comments

Large rocks to hold out the guylines or jamming the stake in between slats.

There is always some way to guy out the tent, even if you have to resort to using rocks for anchors. It can be helpful to have extra cord. Lately I've taken to carrying half a dozen 1.5" roofing nails (they have a large head) and tap those into the planks to use instead of stakes. Then I use a tent stake to pry them out in the morning.

This. Ive never had to drive any nails into a platform to pitch my tarp. The tent stakes in between the slats is perfect.

Yeah, jam stakes in cracks & such. My problem with tent pads is that they were never really quite big enough for my non-freestanding tarp-type tent (zpacks solo+). I could usually squeeze on diagonally, barely.

It depends on the exact design.
Some can stand up with 4 or so stakes over a small footprint others require a lot more space.
You can always just Google and see if you can find a photo of the tent you are after pitched on a platform.
For example I typed "Tarptent Notch platform" and Google images gave me this shot :
You can see how the two ends are secured, then you add the poles and guy them out to the side.

I've never done it, but if you carry a multitool with a Phillips driver, drywall screws work as anchors.

Here in Australia many use wood screw hooks .
Often their are to be found already screwed into the sides.
But you can also jam a stake into the gaps (easier to do with a stick...)Something like this :
(those anchors don't work on thick planks)

Here is a photo of two Notches :
and a TT Squall , just for fun :

Many platforms are not quite long enough for my TT Contrail but I make it work. I use rocks, tie around planks, etc. You might not get a perfect pitch but you will figure it out.
