Hey guys just day hike most of the new section of the Haw River trail/ MTS I'm Alamance county. I'll share some pics below. The River was up 5 feet due to a lot of rain over the past week so unfortunately our trip was cut short before we could finish the newly completed section.

Some history. The Haw River powered the Textile machine I'm Alamance county that for a long time was unmatched around the world. Like many other things jobs went overseas and most of the mills went with them. What is left are skeletons of old mills either still standing or stone walls only found by those who travel the woods. The beautiful Haw River however remains where it's always been, even over the years of excessive pollution the River is slowly changing into a wonderful ecological success story.

thanks for sharing this!

I had heard rumors around saxapahaw that the MST was going to run through town.

I hike the section around falls lake pretty regularly and look forward to getting started on the haw section.

I have only walked the Shallowford Preserve section. How much of the Haw River section is there that is walkable?

I think Saxapahaw is still on the MST long term list depending on how much Haw Trail become walkable. The initial idea is to have the trail from Saxapahaw to Hillsborough and enter Occoneechee Natural Area and use the Hillsborugh Riverwalk trail.

You can do over 8 miles continuous from Indian Valley paddle access to Haw River, there are several other small sections opened but you'd need to bike or road walk to get to the next section for now.....Eventual plans for the HRT will be to run a continuous footpath from Haw River state park all the way to Jordan lake so well over 70 miles that's a lot of future trail planning though.
