i have an old 20 degree sleeping that i had thought weighed around three pounds, turns out it's a 5lb sleeping bag. My problem with this is i haven't really budgeted for a new sleeping bag. i could spend up to $200 for a new one but i'd really like to spend less. i'm the typical broke college girl who's trying to buy the camping gear she needs on a part-time minimum wage budget.

can anyone recommend a 20 degree rated sleeping back that's preferably under 3 pounds and doesn't cost an arm and a leg? i'm probably got my head in the clouds with this request but i figured it doesn't hurt to ask.

You might look for the North Face Cat's Meow. It's synthetic and rated at 20 degrees, and weights about 2 pounds 11 ounces. I've seen it at big box stores like Dicks' and Sports Authority.
Generally speaking, synthetic's will cost less than down, but weight slightly more. So, it's the old trade off of price vs weight savings.

make your own maybe. also take a look at kely lightyears. the synthetic bags are almost as light as down and hella cheap, thats right hella :cool:

I used the Cats Meow on the AT and it worked well. Heavier than down, but given the dampness I ran into out there, that may have been for the best. (When the fog rolls into the shelter, everything gets wet.)
they have a nice used cats meow at Mountain Crossings www.mountaincrossings.com (http://www.mountaincrossings.com) . not sure of the price but i'm sure it's cheap. e-mail them and they will get back to you. they also have some other used stuff as well.
I have and love the Go-Lite Feather ($300, 1 lb 13 oz). They also have a cheaper version, the Go-Lite Doze bag ($200, 2lb 11oz). www.golite.com (your weights will be a bit less, because if you buy a men's size you'll probably buy a short). Go-lite's bags are very warm for their ratings, in my experience.
You might want to look into getting a bag made specifically for women. Supposedly they will be more weight and heat efficient. I know that sierra designs makes such bags, and that as a brand they provide a good product and value. They make the 2lb 13 oz sythetic Rosa for $100 rated at 20 degrees.
Most people from this forum will (rightfully) reccomend expensive brands such as Montbell and WM, who I'll bet make great products, but they are also pretty expensive.
I'd by wary of purchasing anything from sierra trading post. They are mostly products that are a few generations old, so what the product is 'actually' worth is outdated--the deals aren't as good as they seem.
Ebay has great deals, I saw new model Montbell 30 degree and it was up to about 55.00 last I looked, used for a week....excellent condition. You can always find a deal or two there, especially when people get new stuff over Christmas.
