I did a day hike today from hog pen to low gap shelter. It took me 2 hrs to reach from the road, and three hrs to get back. The shelter was nice and the water was running in a stream beautifully. Luckily I live close enough to freez meat the night before and reach the shelter and still have ice on it. I grilled some hot dogs for some German folk and gave them a coke, and left them a fat hooter to marinade on. Plenty of thru hikers in that area. The phrase of the day , "that's the plan". Shelter good shape.

Are there any campsites at Hogpen?

If you follow the path (south side of road down hill) down to the water source you will find some. Just be careful where you set up if it is going to rain as lots of rain water gets funneled down that way.

Great to know. I'd like to avoid the extra 1.5 mile walk to Whitley Gap Shelter if possible. Current forecast is for dry conditions that evening.

TONS of tenting sites in this whole section of the GA AT. I would * never * walk the 1.2mi each way to Whitely Gap shelter!
