For those of you who have hiked with dogs, did you use a doggie jacket? If so, did you put it on them above or below their pack?

My dog wears a jacket in winter (pic 1), a fleece in camp if not too chilly (pic 2), or both while in camp if really cold (pic 3). He does not hike in the fleece jacket as it rubs his front legs if he wears it too much (learned by accident).

I think mine was from Petco. It was given as a donation for the rescue I volunteer for and then donated to Bronx.

It's bad enough putting a pack on my dog. He would bite off my fingers if I tried putting on a dog jacket.

We have a viszla/lab mix with a thin coat. She is so active, she is fine even in winter while she is running around, unless we are above treeline in the wind (well into the negative numbers with windchill).

Except in summer, I take her coat to help keep her warm while sleeping. She doesn't have a pack, but if she did, it would have to go over, not under her coat.

We had a Viszla. She was a singing dog. Does your Viszla sing if you leave the house without her?

My pit wears a Kelly K9 pack year round and a Ruffwear jacket underneath when it's under 45F.

I can't figure out how to edit that post. He wears them both when it's under 35F. He seems to stay very warm when he's moving and the pack just adds to that. Age and condition matter, of course, but I'm usually more concerned with him overheating than "underheating" during a hike. Night time is a different story entirely.

I've got a husky lab mix. He wears a molle backpack to carry his own supplies and when it's cold out we bring his ugly Christmas sweater, a fleece blanket and a chunk of thick yoga mat to insulate him from the cold ground. He has short hair, but as a husky he doesn't mind the cold as much. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160419/51abbd1090be9357370140b61e0590bb.jpg
His pack is on the ground in front right. He doesn't wear them together, though.

Cheers,
the Goat
