One of the routes passes right by my front door - anybody is welcome to drop in!
Be prepared for the different hiking style and different regulations. There are not many places camping is welcomed, and fires are prohibited everywhere, except for the owner on his private land.
The most common style is to travel from hut to hut, which can be quite pricey, and will sum up over the whole time of travel.
What's the typical cost of a hut?

20 dollars
Cost variy wide per country and also depend on who is running the hut. And of course it depends on what you are ordering.
Usually huts offer a basic accommodation thats very reasonable priced, like common sleeping room with bunks, hot water (for to make your own tea), and a basic meal.
But that doesn't mean that the huts are primitive, many of them are luring you with almost any luxus you may imagine. And yes, alcohol is common.
It is recommended to become member of one of the Alpine Clubs, to get a discount (up on the huts, and in some town sport shops too), and also some rescue insurance.
And its highly recommended to call ahead and make reservations for lodging during hiking season, as well as getting information about business time out of season.
See a typical hut info and price list here:

Prices start with 11,- for an members overnight stay in a bunk, and top out at 61,- for a single room half board.
