i am new to the world of hammocking. i am thinking about getting one soon. do you think a WM Highlite will be enough for summer hiking or would i need some sort of insulation for the bottom.

On really warm nites I sleep on my bag in my hammock. On anything other than warm nites I used a pad in the hammock. I love my Western Mount. Highlite. But I sleep warm and sweat slightly so I can only carry down if there is plenty of time to dry stuff out everyday (read, short trips). Take the willingness to change. Bring love.

I can be comfortable with nothing under me, in calm conditions, to maybe 70 F. Zipping inside a sleeping bag will get me a bit lower, but much since the insulation is compressed.

Even a 1/4" pad will help a lot...then use your bag as a top quilt.

i'm good without anything on the bottom to about 80... below that, i need something... usually a blue foam pad... that's good down to about 60... below that, i use the JRB underquilt. that's good down to about 45... both pad and underquilt will get me down to about 30 (coldest i've tried so far.)

(for all of that, i've used a WM Caribou bag (35*), either over, under, or next to me... my legs get cold even in mid summer in LA...)

your bag will be fine... but you need some sort of insulation under you... experiment in your backyard or overnight trip, as you find what works for you...
