Hey all. This is what I'm looking to get (http://www.columbia.com/mens-the-compounder-ii-shell-WM2145.html), but having a difficult time tracking it down in the UK was wondering if anyone could recommend something similar/something you've taken and it's been a dream

Help would be appreciated

There are basically three kinds of "waterproof-breathable" rain shells: Goretex, eVent, and proprietary coatings. Goretex and eVent are laminated membranes, and offer the best breathability (still very limited of course), and are also generally expensive. Proprietary coatings generally offer less breathability, and are usually much less expensive.

This jacket you linked to is a very expensive proprietary coating jacket. Sort of the opposite of what one would expect. How did you decide on this particular jacket? By the way Amazon in the USA has it from an independent shop for $180 (http://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Mens-Compounder-Shell-Jacket/dp/B00AY1BGUS).

I've had decent results with Marmot jackets, both the inexpensive Precip jacket (usually less than US$100), and the more expensive Goretex versions. They have some very light jackets. My current jacket is a Montbell Peak shell, which is quite decent for a proprietary coating, and cost about $200.

None of these jackets has ever "been a dream". Hiking in the rain means one gets wet, either from rain or from perspiration - the jacket is only there to regulate body temperature, at least in my experience.

Hope this helps.

There is discussion on backpacking light.com about the jacket listed and it's not very favorable. In all honesty, if I hadn't already sunk $$ on a jacket, I would get the Frogg Toggs UL jacket. It's cheap and will get the job done. If the OP is coming to hike this summer, it's nothing like the wet weather of the UK.

You have helped quite a lot, the only problem is I'm a small/medium trying to find something in that size is hell lol. I managed to pick it up for less than 100 dollars luckily (this is why I love eBay) and it was part of a few people's list I followed and recommended it.
