I had my first slikepacking experience this weekend and I loved it! I parked my car at the Byron Reece Trailhead and biked (with my daypack packed with running shoes, food, and water) to Woody gap. The 16mi bike up Wolfpen Gap and Woody Gap took me ~1 1/2 hrs. I got to Woody Gap just in time for lunch. I locked up my bike, changed into my running shoes and did the ~11mi hike back to the Byron Reece Trailhead in 3hrs 45min. This was the first time I hiked in my tri suit and it worked great for hiking. The padded butt made sitting on rocks and logs much more comfortable :) When I got back to my car I drove back to Woody Gap to pickup my bike. The whole trip took just under 6 hours.

Does anyone else know of any other good slikepacking routes?

The whole trail has been hiked that way by at least one person.

When I searched google for "slikepacking" I found this thread, and a bunch of porn links. What the heck is slikepacking?

Bikepacking is established usage. I've not seen it combined with slackpacking before, but...ok!

Now, if I took two bikes, I might seriously consider doing this. Leave the first bike at Springer Mountain, ride the second bike to a point about ten miles away and rejoin the trail, hike back to Springer Mountain, pick up the second bike and ride twenty miles and leave it near the trail, hike the ten miles back to get the first bike, ride it 20 miles... all the way to Katahdin.

Thank you , whiteblaze.net. I may just have to do this.

I'll call it 'Frogpacking short for leapfrog packing.

Slow and Steady hiked the entire AT this way with two cars, although only Slow finished. Doing it with 1 car and 1 bike seems like either more work or more fun... or both.

What, you guys don't slike the term slikepacking?

Seriously though, for section hikes I feel that this is the best way to combine my two favorite activities. I like biking because of the exhilaration of flying down hills and the ability to cover more ground in a short amount of time. But on the other hand I like hiking because I get to slow down and enjoy being out in the woods by myself.

I've bikepacked (biked and camped) up in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, NC but didn't include any significant hiking (other than from the trailhead to a camping spot). I think that might be my next slikepacking destination but I still need to figure out the best route.

gte,

Welcome to whiteblaze, btw.

Naming conventions aside, this is a pretty kick-@$$ idea.

What is slikepacking and what is a tri suit?

This is a tri suit: http://www.pearlizumi.com/US/en/Shop/Tri/Men's/Apparel/Bottoms/Suits/Men's%20SELECT%20Pursuit%20Tri%20Suit/p/13111604021

I think this will be my go-to hiking baselayer from now on.

Pros for hiking: Lightweight, drys fast, padded butt, and if you come to a swimming hole you can just jump right in (after taking your pack off of course).
Cons for hiking: Little protection from sun and bugs, doesn't leave much to the imagination (eg, you'll have to beat the ladies off with a stick)
