Last weekend I returned to explore more of this amazing place-Frozen Run Gorge. This was an off-trail hike, although there were some old grades along the creek. The focus of our exploration were the cliff rims around the gorge. We began on the west rim and enjoyed the first views, when we heard the buzz of a rattlesnake, invisible among the leaves. We soon left, but I was concerned. I hoped it was too cool for them, and the cliffs we were hiking to faced south in the warm sun. So, I found a big stick to pound the ground and I called out to the snakes. No other snakes rattled at us, and we only saw one other, hiding under a rock. When then dropped down into the gorge, passing a cave. We explored this beautiful stream with massive boulders, non-stop rapids, cascades, and pools. Boulder Falls was just a beautiful spot as the falls appeared from between massive boulders. We then explored a mossy, red rock grotto with more water slides and deep pools. The trees were just beginning to bud. This was an excellent hike. It had it all. The scenery of this place was non-stop, even the side streams had waterfalls and crystal clear pools, grottos of red bedrock or fractured cliffs. One of PA's hidden crown jewels. The views overlooked the deep gorge and featured the impressive Pickenville Cliffs. The hike took longer than I expected, there was just too much to see, and the terrain was rugged. An amazing place that will stay with me.

Welcome to PA. This state forest is north of Williamsport. This hike is a little south of Ralston. Lots of great hiking in the Loyalsock State Forest.
