I use Backcountry Navigator. If you upgrade from the free version it has a lot more map choices available. If you load the USFS layer, it'll show you major trails in National Parks & forests. It's pretty good, and allows you to create/take pictures of waypoints and export data. Yes- its a power hog, but very worth it.

I like Gaia GPS over Backcountry Navigator, although either is OK for casual trail use. If you plan on doing any bushwhacking or route finding I strongly recommend something like a Garmin Oregon.

As a beginner to smartphones I started with using Google Maps/Earth. Due to the very limited Features looked for something better and ended up using Backcountry Navigator, following a recommendation on White Blaze (or was it Postholer?).
Works very fine, quite economic on the battery and maps available almost worldwide.
