Folks,
Not sure if this has been posted here before; I didn't find it on an initial search.
Connie @ the Greasy Creek Friendly (just north of Iron Mtn Gap in Tennessee) is doing a GoFundMe to repair her hostel's roof:
https://www.gofundme.com/greasycreekfriendl

I've never stayed at the Friendly, but I made a donation 'cause people like Connie and places like the Friendly are part of what make the AT special.

So, pls consider helping her out...

Sounds like she needs to raise her rates.

Not if she gets the funding.

Not this time, no.

Well I donated in hopes she is not forced to raise rates (or close, which is the alternative), the need for low cost, great character accommodations for the thru hikers is worth donating to IMHO. I know many here would think the opposite.

That is all well and good, but in turn it does no one any good either when a service provider undercharges for their services. As we regularly see the result is a deterioration of the property and services and the inability to properly maintain them.

In an earlier post on this, there was a photo that showed a huge flat screen TV w/sound system. Some folks just need to get their priorities in order. BTW here in TN there are many hostels at several locations or just whip out your cell phone and you can get a shuttle to one provided you can pay the shuttle fee.Back in the early 80s hostels and hiker friendly towns were few and far between.Hikers did just fine back then because more came to the AT more prepared and wanted a "wilderness experience".I can read via Trail Journals of the many hikers who actually stop at almost every hostel. Some can't go more than a few days w/o a shower and shelter from cold or rain.

HOLY COW, I am not for or against gofundme's. If people want to give money away that is not my business.

A pretty bold statement unless you know for a fact that the TV was not a gift or donated or ??

So I take it, a 'donation only' hostel is inappropriate & ill conceived?

I stàyed there a few

nights ago, was well worth the walk back up to the trail. Was by far the cleanest ànd well run Hostel so far. I kicked in $10 for the roof fund because the prices were so cheap. I won't fault her pricing because it takes some extra incentive to walk an extra .6 at the end of the day.

Oh, other than the friendly advice I'm not against gofundme requests in general. I don't think anybody is getting rich from owning a hostel so there is merit to the claim that it's a community service, like you said. However, I'm curious why nobody mentioned that the hostel owner is going to become like a fed bear, living on handouts, or that this kind of thing is an indirect subsidy to lazy hikers (which it is), who need to get better jobs so they can pay more for hostel stays if they truly appreciate the trail or whatever. Let them stay in tents! ;-)

Anyway...

Thanks for the heads up! I stayed here last year on my section hike with my daughter and it was just what we needed. Glad I could chip in a bit for the roof.

Is her crazy old neighbor still alive and there? On my 2009 thru-hike I was alone in the barn when he ran his mower for 3 hours starting around 4:30 AM. He even stopped to refuel it. Haha. Freaked me out.

Pretty much, yes. Certainly if it's a donate whatever-you-will.

My daughter and I stayed at the "Friendly" a few years back. Connie (or "Ceacy") was a kind, caring lady. As I recall, she had even shopped for something for me on her grocery run before our arrival.

I'd go right back and stay again and will donate on her page. I wish her well.
