was out doing a section hike from 183 to hawk mountain road. Went threw the little town of port clinton and found that the Port Clinton Hotel/restraunt/bar was awesome but also found out there was no pay phones in the area.

Used to be one on the outside wall next to the door at the Post Office.

That's yet another advantage to cell phones. They are driving pay phones to extinction.

Most people do not know but someone has to pay for a pay phone service. In 2001 the caretaker at the church hostel in Pearisburg said they were going to have the pay phone removed because it was costing to much.

Funny you should mention that Blue Jay ...BA Turtle and I were out at a local restaurant last weekend and noticed that the entire bank of payphones on stand outside had been removed. Ironically only the phones themselves were gone. The structure that used to support them and the phone books was still in place.

I guess some day parents will stumble across one of these old stands with their kids and have to stop and explain what a pay phone was. Probably about the same situation as I was in when my kids were small and they heard about "pay toilets". I actually remember when there were ONLY pay toilets at the airport. Pretty rough when you really had to go and didn't have any change ....

I thought there was one inside the Port Clinton Hotel. Not in the restaurant part. From the bar, take the side door into a hallway of the hotel part. The pay phone is on the wall - at least it was there in November '04.

I had a family emergency while I was in Port Clinton that brought me home this year. The Cabella's a few miles down the road has a nice phone I sat next to for many hours. It is all good.

My cell phone barely worked in Port Clinton. However, it (Verizon) worked from almost every other spot I needed it to.

There's plenty of pay phones everywhere. Cell phones suck.

Pay phones usually work 100% of the time.
