My daughter just section hiked this part. She arrived at the Zoo 10 minutes after closing and had to do the bypass, which she found to be poorly maintained and full of poison ivy. Just a word of warning to anyone having to do this part.
Walk along the shore of Hessian Lake till it meets the hill -- you'll find the AT soon enough. I did that by accident, that's how I know. There's a nice paved path around the lake.
