Did you just make this hike? Gumball and I met up with a BS troop that stayed in the shelter you showed at the beginning of the video just this past week. I suspect they were responsible for the firewood supply and decent condition.

Yes, late May to early June. There are 5 of those shelters in total along the midstate trail. Not spaced out very well for a thru-hike if you wanted to revolve your overnights around staying in them. That first shelter was only 1 mile into the trail. And there is a section around the middle where you hit 3 of them over about a 7 mile stretch.

A buddy and I did a loop that included that first shelter near the RI MA border. There is a cool monument (obelisk actually) near there where the state lines of MA CT and RI meet.

I walked this trail in 2007, mostly southbound, as a series of weekend bike-hikes.

I've stayed at or near Muddy Pond shelter a couple times now and climbed Mt. Watatic several times. I never found the trail marker for the northern terminus.
