....."the road would bisect the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and be visible for many miles along the AT, destroy 28 miles of the Benton MacKaye Trail, pose a serious threat to 140 pure mountain streams due to polluted runoff from exposure of the acidic rock in the area, and harm vital habitat for a multitude of forest species including black bear and migratory songbirds".....

There is another thread on this in the "Park, Forest and Wilderness" forum. I am trying to keep pretty good track on it at http://ihikeat.blogspot.com/

On the site I also have a short video of my last trip in the Smokies. It is at an area that will be destroyed if this road was to be built.

Thanks for the post. I'll be at the Febuary 7th public hearing in Asheville.

oh great. Now isn't that all we need. Sly... Your appearance at the meeting is gonna make them think they are on the set of Deliverance II or something. If you are lucky they will think you are from that community that was forced out of the Smokies way back and never got the road into the Smokies to give them access to their cemetaries. Your arguement against a road will through them for a spin I'm sure. Just make sure to wear your good dentures SLY !!! :banana

the road to nowhere proposal really irks me, but what irks me even more is the proposal to put an interstate from savannah, ga to knoxville, tn. that would totally wipe out the somewhat remoteness of the nantahalas and surrounding areas, not to mention what it would do to the wildlife and flora.

I hardly ever drink. In '05 I had wine at two weddings, had some spring water while playing poker a couple times, and hhmm yeah that's about it. Calling me a drunk is quite funny though coming from you. Whatever you do at that meeting just don't say the words "pretty mouth" or squeeeeel like a pig" cause you'll clear the building. hahahahaaaa

Dew, your being very mean spirited to some good folks, and IMO it's totally uncalled for. Not to mention antithetical to your professed faith. Sly should be applauded for taking the time to go to this important meeting.

I'll be attending at least one of the meetings. I just don't know which one(s) yet. Knoxville is probably the front runner. I'd love to see a strong turnout by the hiking community. It'll be necessary if this boondoggle is going to be stopped.

Sounds like Swain County may be using the 1943 road promise to force the $52 million payout instead. If this is true, then you don't have to worry about the road, they're just jockeying for a higher payout which they will almost certainly get. Do they really want the road built?

Unfortunately the I-3 project appears to have no such motive, other than stoking the ego of certain senators.

yes swain county and Bryson city Do want the road built ,,,the one time "small" pay off is Nothing compared to getting the road and becoming another gateway community.

right now in AK we are having a similair road "problem" the old stampede trail...just north of Healy AK

this summer gravel will be hauled and the road improvement started for a nothern entrance to Denali national park,,,eventually the road will connect back in at Wonder lake,

going to happen..despite the protest by local residents,,

because TOO MUCH $$$ to be made.

$$$ rule.
