I'm organizing another get-together to celebrate returning to the trail after a too-long hiatus. It consists of a group hike up to Thomas Knob Shelter in the Grayson Highlands (and back) with a celebratory picnic (BYO) at the shelter. This hike is open to all, and a great way to meet other WBers!

If interested, please either sign up here or PM me

(Of course there'll be trail magic bags for all!)

I was using the phrase strictly metaphorically, as in "come enjoy nature's beauty".

Hey, wanted to introduce my wife to hiking and hikers! How hard is this hike? Sounds like a fun day hike to me. Hike On!!!!

It's not too difficult. I'm a really slow hiker so it took me a couple of hours to get to Thomas Knob when I last tried. The terrain is fairly easy, and the scenery is spectacular. (Made me feel like I was in a John Wayne movie!) Come on along. It will be fun!

I don't believe it's even a weekend, but a "mere" dayhike only.

I don't know if a fresh red apple is human food but I carried one into Mt Rogers back on a 1997 backpacking trip (see below) and the little motard pony wanted it bad enough to bite me on the right butt cheek to get it. It happened as shown below, taken right before the bite. We talked (me and the pony---his name was Jimmy by the way) and we came to an understanding. (Check out my old 1980 North Face Backmagic backpack leaning against table).

Fast forward to 2011 when I was camping on Wilburn Ridge and a mom and her pony kid came up and stuck their heads into my tent. Fun was had by all. I suppose and assume they would tear food a food bag left unattended??

Sorry for the the long post
I take it this is parking lot where the AT spur trail is and not the parking lot up the road a bit. I will most likely be doing a 3 - 5 day hike spending the first night at the Shelter and then doing Mr Rodgers the next day before moving on to another shelter.
Since I am retired and have or less have all the time in the world I figured it would be a good shake down for some of my gear and sharpen up on some skills.
I spent most of today taking a nice long ride from Bluff City Tn (where I currently reside to the Jefferson NF welcome center on route 16 just outside Marion Va. I was able to talk to one of the staff (Margret) and we discussed some possible routes, since she is a hiker and has a good portion of that section of the trail. She did recommend the Scales and Crest Trail for the views. So any advice on a loop from Massie Gap and back would be welcome.
After stopping at the NF welcome center I continued on south to Valoney and then taking route 58 to Grayson Highlands SP so I could find out where we are meeting.
After that I took 58 to Damascus and then back Home via 58 and TN91. A lot of twist and turns involved, but all in all a good trip and I was able to get a few pictures
By the way I drive a Blue 2014 Honda CRV.

Grayson Highland ponies are transplants from Assateague Island in VA where it is illegal in both places to feed or pet the ponies. At Assategue Rangers enforce this park rule diligently. Suggesting or implying 'come pet the ponies' even if intended metaphorically is in bad taste as there are those who will believe and act on anything said or suggested on the web. In Grayson I've seen Rangers disrupt and sternly chastise people who feed and touch the ponies. Even though in both places the ponies are semi wild seeming they are still wild. The saying 'keep wildlife wild' is a rather common admonishment. Wildlife is to be enjoyed at a distance with respect to keeping it wild for its own sake. Neither place is a human petting zoo.

Dogwood, please don't take offense, but ..... bite me. I'm really tired of the holier-than-thou attitude I've received over this. I tried to make it clear that my phraseology was for the sake of alliteration and not actually a recommendation to defy the regulations regarding the ponies. For my efforts I've already been personally attacked and accused of being of "low morals". For what? For assuming WhiteBlazers can read the "do not touch" signs and know better than to violate the park regulations despite my colorful portrayal?

I'd appreciate it if all the naysayers would relax enough to realize that not everyone is out to threaten wildlife, the environment, the trail, etc. I'm capable of both respecting and enjoying the aforementioned. I refuse to take responsibility for the behavior of others however.

MuddyWaters

If ponies were wild, Id be all over people for petting and feeding as well.
But they arent.
They are only feral in a somewhat loose sense as well, having been placed there, and somewhat managed.
They receive yearly checkups from a vet for petes sake.

they are like domestic ponies in a back 40 pasture.
A really big back 40 pasture.

Officially discouraging interaction is probably as much to protect people from accidental bites and kicks, as it is to protect the ponies from poor diet, etc.
