was curious if anyone has any opinion on the mhm Divide 65 backpack for an AT thru-hike? I am 5'10" and have broad shoulders for a woman and have tried on so many backpacks from Osprey, REI, Gregory, Deuter, and Granite Gear with the employees telling me each time that the fit is just not quite right. I have an old, lower back injury and had my doctor and specialist tell me that I should try to find a pack that has a form of pivoting hip belt to help. I tried on the women's Gregory Diva, which has a pivoting belt and it felt completely awesome on my lower back but the fit was just awful and uncomfortable up top, the employee even tried switching out the straps and a few other tweaks to get it to work but no such luck. At least after trying a pivoting belt pack and finding that it most definitely does help with my lower back, I know I need to stick with pack that has one. I know the Divide 65 is heavy at 5.5lbs but I also know that the super popular Gregory Baltoro is also heavy - I am not into the uber-light backpack options out there because I really, really need the support). I saw a few posts on Trail Journals of thru-hikers using mhm packs and being very happy with them in the past few years but nothing from the past year. Would love to hear if anyone has any info on this pack or opinions?

Educate the Old Guy. Who or what is MHM?
I believe that one or more ArcTeryx (spelling probably off) packs have a pivot belt connection. Or they did. The way things change in the market today, you don't know from day to day what is available.
Good luck.

LOL Venchka - MHM stands for Mile High Mountaineering :-) I have tried so many of the big store/big name packs that I started to look at some other options. They have some really good reviews online here and there but they are not a very well known name. Arcteryx does make the Altra backpack that pivots and has gotten stellar reviews online but no one in any of the forums has ever used one and it costs a fortune. This is the MHM site http://www.mhmgear.com/

Buy the Arc'Teryx from REI. Use your year to decide if it works for you.
Only you will know which pack is right for you.

What is a pivoting hipbelt?

If you want to pursue the Cottage Industry route, talk to the folks at Seek Outside in Grand Junction, CO. They have come up with a different mouse trap. Roughly 3 pounds of backpack that will handle more load than mere mortals are willing to carry.
Good luck.

Keep in mind that the description of the Divide 65 says it has 11 pockets and every pocket will have at least a little wasted space. So times that wasted space by 11.
