None of the above? Why would you need an app for those activities? Just curious.

For what? Again, I'm trying to learn.

From my experience, if you are using an app, you're doing it wrong. I guess I am turning into "Grumpy Old Man" but, in my day...

Guthook apps are excellent...shows your gps location on the trail while in airplane mode......water, shelter proximity and numerous very useful tools...I used it far more on the Jmt than my ETB guide and also bought the collegiate loop app.......should be there now!!! Damn it!!!!

Often used by kids these days. You don't want one.

My favorite apps on the trail are bacon, pepperoni sticks and sharp cheddar cheese

But I also use guthook because it lets me contextualise where I am at. I don't bring 500 maps on long distance hiking, so it is good to show me the lay of the land and exactly where I'm at. AWOL guide or my compass don't show me the names of things, etc.
I prefer a good map, but doesn't always give much detail if you're going a ways

I also use backcountry navigator as a gps app when I hike unmarked trail or canoeing aimlessly. You can predownload the topo maps and just turn on gps as needed

My Colorado trip has morphed into something else. Again.
I'll buy the Colorado CDT section for Guthook's app just so we will know where we can get water without going too far downhill.
Have fun!

I use AllTrails. It helps me find trails to hike in areas I'm not familiar with.

I just downloaded a strobe light app, and some fire engine sounds. if I wake up at night and see a bear lookin down at me, I'm gonna turn those on full blast and see what happens!

Now that you mention it, I remember one guest on The Trail Show telling how he played a recording of a red tailed hawk on his smartphone to scare marmots away from his tentsite.
