The reality is what fuel is more readily available. Along the AT, it's white gas

When you say burn more efficiently, I am not sure if you mean BTU ouput per fuel spent or cheapest price of fuel to burn. In any event I do know that Kerosene does not burn as hot and in terms of the mess it makes, I would prefer to never use it again.
I do use autofuel in my W-Lite when traveling. I think it burns hotter (it certainly is more explosive than white gas) and it is much cheaper than white gas.
I also sometimes use it in the winter in -20 degree trips simply because it is easier to light when below -20 than straight white gas (but not much easier) :)
