40 if you have a way to supplement it with a liner and base layers, otherwise the 20 would be prudent.

The reasoning with going with a 20 degree is the fact that night temps can dip below 40 . It's always a good idea to carry the warmer bag on a section hike during shoulder season.

I did a stretch around the 20th last year and it got close to 30 a night or two. 20 should be perfect, and you wouldn't have to rely on other stuff like liner, etc

Either will work if you can supplement you our 40 on few coldest nights with clothes.

20 will be quite warm many nights that are 40-50. But extra insul is beneficial for getting warm when cold and damp/wet.

Id take the 20 solely for latter reason, and just deal with it on warmer nights. Ive survived a 40 at 28 before, without supplemental clothing. Glad for sun to come up for sure.
