WEST PARIS, MAINE – The West Paris Library will host a new exhibit, beginning August 18 and ending September 30, of works by Sharon Garvey. “Moonlight and Indian Pipe” is a display of photographic images of the natural world around us, as well as pen and ink illustrations for Edward B. Garvey’s book, “The New Appalachian Trail.”

Sharon and her husband, Tim Wisecarver, live in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia and summer in Otisfield at Tim’s family home. Sharon spends many hours, day and night, photographing sights from nature, much of it from her own backyard.

From a young age Sharon accompanied her father, Edward B. Garvey, on hiking and camping trips. Mr. Garvey, a well-known hiker and conservationist, instilled in her an appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the natural world. The illustrations in the exhibit were done for his last book, “The New Appalachian Trail,” published in 1997, just two years before his death.

In it he recounts the challenges he faced attempting a second thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail at age 75. His first book, “Appalachian Hiker; Adventure of a Lifetime,” published in 1971 after his first completion of the trail, raised public awareness of thru-hiking.

Sharon earned a B.F.A. from the University of Notre Dame, having been a member of the first class of women admitted to the school. She completed a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies at St. John’s College in Sante Fe, N.M., and subsequently became a member of the faculty, teaching there for several years.

Her training and long-term involvement in art have led her to work at one time or another, in all of the usual two-dimensional media as well as pumpkin sculpture and pyrography.

Please join in at the library on Thursday, August 18th, at 6:30 p.m. for the opening reception of this two-fold exhibit. Sharon will give a talk and accompanying slide-show on both her photographs and the book she illustrated. Refreshments will be served.

The library is located at 226 Main St. in West Paris, Maine. For more information, call the library at 674-2004. Library hours are Monday and Friday, 1:30-6 p.m.; Wednesday, 1:30-7 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
