Just curious if there is any feedback on the new permit system in place at Baxter by thru hikers that have actually used it this summer?

The park is getting into its busy season for north bound thru hikers and the peak week of the year for total park use so I expect the biggest impact is the next few weeks. One nice thing this year is the dry weather pattern has most likely made for lots of Class 1 days on the mountain so there are less issues with thru hikers hanging a few days hoping for good weather.

It would be great if the new outreach effort in Monson and at the Abol Bridge along with the permits makes a positive impact for both the park and the thru hikers.

I arrived at Birches Campground on July 16th. The very nice and supportive ranger came by and filled out my permit and collected the $10 fee for the shelter. He gave me some good advice on how to handle the climb the next day and best places to hitch a ride the following day to Millinocket. Easy and no problem.
