You can start hiking anytime you want. Registering with the ATC is not mandatory. They just like people to do that so they can keep track of the number of people hiking.

I'm sure the reasons for NOT doing the approach trail are many. I doubt "worry" is one of those reasons.

I am not doing it mainly because I have already hike down the falls, up the falls, the entire approach trail to Springer, and the trail leading from the Approach to the Hike Inn and back to Amicalola Falls SP.

Also, the AT starts at Springer. It really doesn't matter HOW one gets to Springer. The Approach trail mileage does not factor into the AT 2181 miles (or whatever it is this year)

One term you will hear often on the trail, if you havent heard it already, is hike your own hike.

Hey. I was planning on starting 3-1-17 and still might but was also thinking of 3-13-17 that's a Monday after the time change so it will be darker later. Either way you will meet TONS of people to hike with. I did 4 days Springer to Neels Gap in April. 1st to the 4th. I started around 2pm and I was hiker 32 leaving that day thru the parking lot. Mountain Squid was there taking count. I also did Neels Gap to Fontana this June. I never spent a night alone. There are tons of people hiking all the time. But hey maybe see ya on the trail. I'll know more of a set date as it gets closer.

My primary challenge is I have to work while undertake this adventure. The plan is to use my motor home to work from during the week. I'll move the motor home up the trail as sections are completed. The hope is to complete 25+ miles on the weekend and short 6-8mile sections during week day evenings. It will take the full year to complete so I plan to flip flop at some point. I'll do the approach trail New Year's eve and start NOBO on New Year's day. I'm going to schedule a mid-July Katahdin summit and then SOBO. Where I leave the trail in July will be my finish point. I'm afraid this will be anticlimactic but got to do what I got to do.

NOBO
April 15
No approach trail (Is this a problem? I'll do it if most people consider it part of the trail, but I don't mind cutting these miles since I'm already planning on 2189 miles.)

I've got preliminary approval from my boss to take Pay Without Leave for five or six months. But I'm not cleared by human resources yet. I'm cautiously optimistic. Otherwise I have to wait nine years until I retire.

I dislike cold weather, and figure I can pack a little lighter if I start April 15ish. My plan right now is to hammock. We'll see if that lasts.

I've got a couple of ideas for a trail name, but 1) how many "Ranger"s are on the AT every year, and 2) I also like the idea of stumbling (not literally) onto a trail name. Sort of like how you shouldn't name pets when you first meet them; you and they will figure out their name after a week or so.

I also figure (hope) I will finish in approximately 5 months, but am budgeting 6 months just in case.

I will be 48, but I really am a very young 48. My biggest fear is that I will be slower than the 20-somethings, and quicker than the 40+ crowd, so I'll never really be in any tiny bubbles. I am avoiding "the bubble" on purpose. I am hiking solo. My gf plans to meet with me at several points in Virginia during June/July weekends.

My other fears are being slowed down by blisters, and turning my ankle. I'm a fairly determined person, so the only thing that will prevent me from reaching Katahdin is injury.

Mid April from Harpers Ferry at the Flip Flop Festival date, when it's set. I'm guessing April 15.

I just completed the Southern Section, Springer to Harper's Ferry (1,024) miles in about 90 days. Technically I won't actually be completing a thru, given that I'll end up at Katahdin after 365 days have passed, so call me a "Slasher", or a Thru in 2, or whatever, but I'm excited as can be to get back out & head north! Someone told me I should consider myself part of the 2017 class, so I will.

Let me me say that I had a fantastic hike this spring/summer and expect a similar hike next year. No one wants to hear me blather on about what I just did, so I won't. But for all first timers, whether you have LD experience or not, you are in for quite a journey!

I will gladly share with anyone who wishes to PM me for more information.

I am posting this as a tentative. I am possibly going to be laid off in December and based on whether or not this happens my thru hike stands in the balance. I am not wishing for this to happen but it could. I am setting myself up for a deep winter hike and have almost all the gear for it. I have over 300 miles of section hike done already but I am planning on doing it all in one swell foop. :) I know a lot of you know me as a trail angel here in Waynesboro, PA and if you happen to come thru the Mason-Dixon line send me an email as I would be glad to help anytime I am free. I take it you are talking about the http://www.appalachiantrail.org/home/explore-the-trail/thru-hiking/voluntary-thru-hiker-registration. It's voluntary and you can go whenever you like and don't have to register.

Approach Trail - heck yes! I've heard there are WATERFALLS!

Hi fellow thru hike attempters! Wishing you the best of luck on preparing, and lots of adventures and successes during your hike!

I attempted to hike from New York to Maine with my ex gf in 2010, but had to get off due to some ill-fitting boots that had just gone too far in their damage (properly fitting shoes are SO IMPORTANT). But the AT put the hiking bug in me, and I've been hiking ever since. But now I'm ready, ready not only to hike that ~800 miles, but the whole thing!

I'm currently residing in Houston, TX. I'm also training to run in the Houston marathon in January. When I'm not running, hiking or working, I'm avidly writing or reading, or practicing human suspension. My interests run the gammit!

I'm so eager to be on the trail.. I've got a few personal goals to accomplish while out there and I'm looking forward to all the adventures and people that I will meet on this great adventure!

I plan on starting in early April as a flip-flopper. I haven't pinned down the exact location but somewhere in lower VA. My trail name, courtesy of my daughter, is COWG. I will be 66 and am from Omaha, NE though as a retired/disabled Army helicopter pilot I am from lots of places but originally from MN. Adventure and experiencing the awesomeness of this hike are what draws me in and hiking for others (Disabled Veterans of America, Children's Hospital of Nebraska, and the Sarcoma Foundation of America) is what I hope will sustain me during the tougher moments out on the Trail.

see ya on the trail. I'm starting the same day.

Same same, changed my date to have a second day off after flying from Australia. Will now start on the 13th. Thinking of shuttling up, on the 12th Sunday afternoon and getting an early start on the 13th. Staying in the Perimeter area, Dunwoody, Atlanta. REI store across the road for all the little things I'm not bringing such as esbit tabs.

Reading trail journals, people shuttling up on the day they start often don't start walking much before lunch time. I would hate to waste 1/2 a day. This way I will be able to get some good video at the start without hordes around, I hope. I may even stroll down the track a little bit and camp as I imagine there will be a crowd at Springer, from the map there looks like lots of likely places withing 200 - 500 metres the other side of the parking area.

The shelter at Springer is huge. Been there plenty of spots. Plus if you get there around noon you can still hike up to Springer and back down to Hawk Mt shelter by 4 or 5. It's only 8 miles and easy flat trail.

For those who are trying to register their start date with appalachiantrail.org it looks like you will be able to beginning November 24th.

Here is a note that I received from Tenny and am posting with his permission.

"Gary,

I spoke with the director of southern regional office of the ATC, who is orchestrating the registration system. Looks like it will be live by November 24th--Gobble, gobble :-) Our website now reflects this change.

There was a loophole in the 2016 version that allowed hikers to register their 2017 hikes as a 'flip flop thru-hike starting from a location other than Harpers Ferry.' Unfortunately, these folks will have to re-register their hikes when the 2017 system is live.

Thanks Gary,

Tenny"

Still waiting for my visa (i'm german).
Currently weighing in at 375 lbs. Not doing the trail for the purpose of losing weight, but it will be a nice side-effect.
Been looking forward to this since i learned of the AT's existence in 2001.

ATEAM here! (Hobo & Turtle)
SOBO starting July 4th
"Approach trail" is a must for a SOBO. How else would you get to the start/finish point on top of Katadhin (LOL)

We're 50-something, self - employed, flat landers from College Station, TX. We tackled about 300 miles of the AT during the summer of 2010 (Lee, MA to Mt Washington summit). We fell in love with Vermont so we went back during the summer of 2012 and hiked the Long Trail. Hobo solo hiked GA though SMNP in '07 while I (turtle) was still teaching school but had to end the thru attempt early.

In charge of our own schedule now, we are excited to have more than 6 weeks to spend on the trail. Guess we'll howdy all you NOBO's somewhere in New England.
Happy trails!!!

Leaving the same day, but I'm going up on the 12th from Dunwoody. I like early starts and don't want to waste half a day. May catch you on the trail. I'm a great fan of Plato and if you don't have it this is a great link. https://appalachiantrailclarity.com/2016/03/20/most-important-question-wheres-the-beer/

Looks like about 6 of us starting out the same day. I'm gonna take it slow the first few weeks. 8 to 12 mile days. I'm planning on staying in the same shelters I stayed at when I hiked from Springer to Fontana Dam. That was a good pace for me. 15 days to get there then I'll pick up the pace after the smokies

Approach Trail - yes or no: Maybe
any additional infothat you want the world to know: I’ve done the whole trail. When I left in 15, I was pretty sure I wouldnot hike it again. As time went by, Icontinued to feel the lure of the trail. After months of prayerful consideration, several visits to the trail, and a lot of soul searching, I’ve decided to go again.

When I skipped the approach trail in the past, I feltsomething missing, so I went back to do it. In the past, I tried to do every single foot of the trail. If I got picked up at a road to go into town, and then dropped off on the other side of the road, I’d walk across the road toget that piece. I’m not sure I’llapproach the hike the same way this year; we’ll see.

My 15 adventure is on trail journals; not sure if I will doan online journal again.

See you on the trail!

I've lived in Portland, OR for 10 years but am originally from Roanoke, VA. I grew up hiking parts of the AT and have always wanted to attempt a thru hike. I've been a professional musician for the last 20 years and am transitioning out of playing music for a living and can't think of a better way to change my perspective than an adventure. I have a degree in Meteorology from NC State and my band is called "The Tornadoes" so hence my trail name. I've been training by hiking the PCT around Mt Hood.

I suggest every thru hiker do this, start a week or two early if you feel the need. Too many injuries in the beginning, some of which are due to people pushing their bodies too hard before it has reached its prime and is in better shape to handle the abuse of hiking the AT everyday. I will be doing the same thing as crankybear here.
