View Full Version : New Katahdin Sign
I notice in this years group of thru-hiker photos that the sign at the summit of Katahdin is new. Apparently it was replaced this year so it is not the one that was there when I summited in 2011, that sign was placed in 2009.
Does anyone know where the 2009 - 2016 Katahdin sign is now?
probably someone's wood or kindling pile.
I know there is an old one at the AT museum. I'm sure they give the old one to some AT-centric group for display as there is lots of interest.

i could be wrong about this, but i'm pretty sure that sign is **A** katahdin sign, but not **THE** katahdin sign the OP is asking about.
according to the OP (i'm willing to accept he is correct) the sign was replaced just this year. he is looking for the sign that was there through last year. the sign in the museum has been there... well, a lot longer than just this year. there are more katahdin signs (or were, some may no longer exist) than the one on katahdin and the one in the museum. i'm pretty sure its been replaced several times over.

The latest history of the Katahdin signs (as far as I know) are that it was replaced in 1999, 2009 and 2016. I believe the sign at the AT Museum at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in PA is the '99 to '09 sign. I have seen that one and it is not the one that was in use from '09 to '16. There is also one at the ATC HQ in Harpers Ferry, I believe that is the "99 to '09 sign.

I'd just like to know what happened to it. I hope it ends up in a museum, I thing the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History would be an appropriate place for it.
MATC usually cuts them up. Dont want to create a market for people wanting to make a quick buck and start stealing sighns.

That would be a shame.
As far as a market goes, you can buy a replica hand made sign from several places.
The sign on Katahdin gets replaced every 5-7 years. Only can put so many in a museum. How many people want to see an old weather beaten wooden sign, anyway?

When I was in the AT Museum this past summer, I asked pretty much exactly the question the OP asked. The response was something to the effect of: we don't know, we were just talking about that ourselves, we'd like to know the answer too! I was kind of under the impression they were going to find out.
MATC says the old summit sign is property of BSP, they have it.
