Hi all,

What are the must see spots done via backpacking or car camping?

I have heard lots about Art Loeb, Shining Rock, Black Balsam, Max Patch....trying to come up with a route that hits a few great spots, 1-2nights. Im in Atlanta.

Thank you

Cool. What about near Asheville?

Black Mountain Campground is 45 miles, 1 hours drive east via I-40 and US 70.

Roan Highlands 50 minutes drive away north on I-26 .

I second Roan Mountain area. Absolutely beautiful. Check out Mountain Harbour B&B for shuttle/hostel service. They are known to have the best breakfast on the AT. Here's my brief trip report from Roan Highlands hike Memorial Day. There's a link to photo gallery... http://hikingbob.blogspot.com/2016/05/roan-highlands-indian-grave-to-19e.html

South Mountains State Park is only 64 mi from Charlotte and is really nice. Car camping and backcountry too, IIRC. It might be NC's largest state park.

Graveyard Fields, off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile post 418 just south of Asheville, is spectacular high-altitude terrain with 6,000-foot peaks and plenty of waterfalls.

Just cancelled Smokies trip this weekend due to smoke/forest fires. So....time to come up with something new for during the week for next weekend or maybe even starting tomorrow.

Would love some epic route suggestions; I like to do the must do spots that are amazing for sure. (Some suggestions can be obscure and based on particular taste). I like to do loops/trails that are known to blow your mind on terms of views, scenery etc

2 nights driving from ATL, drive in and start hiking 11am on 1st day, not on AT or just partially, in NC. Shelters a plus. Art Loeb looks amazing but needs more than 2 nights and a bear canister?

I have done already Standing Indian Loop and 2 AT weekend trips in GA.

Thank you
