Argh. They spall every time. I'm going to get a replacement pole rather than just trim off the spalled part.

I'd thought that would do it, especially as it reduces the tension on the pole. Hasn't, obviously, and it keeps breaking in the field.

I've looked a number of replacement sources. They are all pretty cheap. Under ten dollars or so.

Anyone who can recommend better quality? Of the choices out there, which is the best?

Thanks.

All of the REI "ultralight" tents have this issue because they use DAC poles which are thinner than most other poles. I can really recommend a particular tent but the MSR tents are usually pretty sturdy. Another option is a guy in Quebec who sells the entire set of poles, he has all the REI tent pole sizes on file so it's super easy to order from him. If I understand your issue correctly. . .

This is a known problem.
There is a recall in place addressing it. So you can get it fixed for free.
It is actually user error in that the broken poles occur because so many people don't get the cross pole slid completely onto the nub that they attach to.
It is manufacturer error in that the design makes it easy to not get the pole all the way on and is not overbuilt in that area to deal with the problem.

Contact REI with your broken pole and get it the new updated solution.
I don't know exactly what they are doing about. I just recall seeing the recall notice.

I had no idea about the recall notice.

I won't mention the "user error" to my wife as it has only broken when she set it up, never on me.

Buy thank you.

BTW http://tentpoletechnologies.com (http://tentpoletechnologies.com/) is the one REI recommends (they no longer fix or carry tent poles).

We got the tent at the garage sale for $40.00, so the recall may not cover us, but, at that price, the $5-$6 for a new tent pole doesn't matter anyway.

Thank you again.
