OK. I made a couple of ION stoves last night and can't get the flames to come out of the jets. I tried using a priming pan and everything but the flame still just comes out of the center hole. Any ideas?

This may be a silly question but did you put a pot of water above it? If so, did you maintain @ 3/4" between pot and stove?

When I do the flame spreads out but still appears to be coming out of the center. Is this this the normal flame pattern?

Ahh...ok. I finally got it to make the flame pattern like Sgt. Rock shows on his site. The height was wrong. Got it now.

The flames should be spread out to the outside rim of the Ion and going up from there at @ 45 degree angle to the pot. If your's is close to that description, you did it right. The real test of course is how it performs it's intended function, i.e. boiling water. As long as I can boil my +/- 2 cups using the amount of fuel I'm willing to carry, I don't give a rip what the flame pattern looks like.

That being said, knowing what any alcohol stove flame pattern is "supposed" to look like is very helpful if you're into building new designs. It gives you a good feel about what is good or bad about the particular stove and may give you a starting point for possible improvements. Hope this helps.

Although this stove is a smaller diameter than the classic Ion, It is basically the same design and is a good example of the flame pattern.

Best flames that I've seen...

Thanks. I've got the flame right now. The stand I made was too high. The pattern looks just like Sgt. Rock's now. By the way, I couldn't open the link to your picture. Do you have another link?

Don't feel bad; I can't open the link either. Try this:http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/files/6/7/7/9/Cakespraystove016_thumb.jpg
I had trouble posting the picture and Attroll fixed it, but this is a new problem. We'll see if this works. If you want to see it full- size, you can go to photos posted today and find it. Cheers!

That's odd. Your original link worked for me. The image is displayed, full size (600x450 Pixels).

I'm using firefox V 1.5

Got it, thanks. P.S. What do YOU use to cut the top off the wedding tin to make the Ion? I've been scoring them with a Stanley knife then tearing the aluminum. It makes a nice, clean cut but takes a fairly long time. Anything faster?

Fiskars titanium scissors( bought at Lowes ). Pretty quick and clean.

Don't the scissors warp the shape of the can?

Not really. When you cut, don't squeeze them completely closed each time. Take "half cuts" and you won't bend or misshape the tin near as bad. Think delicate thoughts.:D

Fiskars are what we use to cut the tins down all the time. Taking it slow and easy is excellent advise.

I use Fiskars for soda can cutting but the wedding tins are thicker.

Yes they are thicker, but trust me it works. I've even made some of the stoves that we sell. I found cutting a small triangle out first helped keep from warping the tin too much. That and the smaller cuts as mentioned earlier.

Use the triangle cut that Dixiecritter mentioned, then slowly snip and circle the scissors parallel with the lid of the tin. When you've cut 1/4-1/2 inch, start rolling the lip( the part you're removing ) up with your thumb and forefinger( to keep it out of the way of your scissors ), all the while remembering to only take half cuts. It's much easier than it sounds, and I hope my description didn't make it harder! It's tough to verbalize and easy to demonstrate! Good luck.

Thanks guys. I'll try it. I like the cut the way I've been doing it but if the cut is clean and faster, I'd prefer that.
