Amen. Thank you to all service men and women.

This includes my thru-hiker daughter, Grass, who's waiting orders to go active duty as an Air Force Chaplain, my father who served in the Navy in the Pacific in WWII and is still alive, my wife's brother, who is not and whose name is on "The Wall" in DC, and family members alive, past, and KIA who served since 1776.

Our flag went up on our front porch this morning early!

This is the first year I will not be able to call my father and thank him for his service.
He served in the Navy in WWII and the Army in Korea.
Retired Colonel.
May he rest peacefully.

Don't just thank a veteran, ask him or her for a story.

Mine would be a story from the Helm club ....:D

My old unit was just going to chow when the mess hall blew up. A couple guys I know who volunteered to deploy with the unit were killed. A couple people in my platoon were pretty messed up from the blast. A buddy of mine was just walking to the chow hall and was filmed by a news photog carrying wounded out. He's still suffering from PTSD from his tour. I retired 6 months before our unit deployed.

Do tell. After 23 years Army active duty and 8 (and counting) as an Army civilian - I could probably bore you with "there I was" stories.

Um... my favorite moment while I was in the Army was sharing a bottle of champagne with Dallas cowboy cheerleaders in a hot tub at the Marriot hotel in El Paso. Thats my favorite story.

Furlough and all Vets thank you for your service. Being a Vet is a privilege that many of our fallen brothers and sisters never got to hear. Many of our vets that have returned with numerous debillating injuries over the the last fifteen years has created a big hole in my heart for them. Reach out to them or have a cup of coffee with them. Talking with them can be magical for them and for you. I have been lucky enough to hike with some Wounded Warriors with various combat related issues. They inspire me.
