For those that may include tunes to start their day of hiking what do you listen to? I get it, birds chirping, winds blowing, wildlife rustling, rain drops pattering on leaves and the tent, pre dawn light shading the landscape is great. It's not excluded from morning start ups but for those that may include man made music what do you like?

Depending on my vibe here are some that I like:

Back in college my roommate and I listened to Float On by Modest Mouse most days to get moving after a long night out. This past weekend I listened to the Allman Brothers most mornings to get moving. One Way Out is always a good one. I normally don't listen to music once I get moving but while packing up and drinking my morning coffee, always.

So far you've added 6 per so to my morning playlists' keep em coming.

When not quite bright eyed and bush tailed slow to come around with the rain coming down or I'm still snuggled warm in the bag on a cold day Steve Winwood reminds me to put on my Dancing Shoes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4VLwcZIX00

Not so much for getting going in the morning but I tend to listen to New Age or celtic/Irish music...it just seems to blend with the world around me a little more than country, rock or anything else. Instrumental-type stuff from soundtracks are a good listen too, especially Two Steps From Hell (no, not a metal or rock band)

I kind of overdid Orinoco Flow when it first came out and I was into sailing, I've relegated it to the once every decade category for the nostalgia. Same thing with a lot of old favorites including a lot of the songs people have listed above.

Since I can't edit. Listening to the LotR and Hobbit soundtracks while backpacking makes me feel like I am "off on another adventure" and heading to Morder. Sad I know

When I was climbing up Big Firescald Knob, I initially felt like I was on an Indiana Jones movie set, with all the jungle, the mist that day and the rock formations. By the time I got to the top ridge, it had cleared up, and I felt like I was hiking along in the LOTR scene on top of that ridge in New Zealand. I'd hiked a long wet slog of a day previously, but I completely perked up when I hit that area.

I'd guess that 70% of my thru hike started off daily with "2 Minutes To Midnight" from Iron Maiden. When I walk and hear that song now my body sort of goes "ok we're doing this now, here we go!" In contrast, the first few months had plenty of "Mamas and the Papas" going on.

I usually don't listen to music first up in the morning, I reserve it for later in the day when I need a change. I have catagories, my favorites which I shuffle and play at anytime, quick pace music, and music for a climb. I also have some slow peaceful music for when I'm relaxing, often just prior to a combat nap, in the middle of the day. I also like to listen to audio books for a change. For those, like me, who hate having their ears and hearing blocked by earbuds, my kids bought me a pair of bone conduction headphones, which are great as you can still hear everything around you.

I think it's time. Paraphrasing Kevin Klein in the Big Chill.
"There's no music after the 60s."
I will concede that there have been a few notable exceptions.
The Eagles, The Corrs, a bunch of country artists. The occasional GNR tune. Donna Summer, Bonnie Tyler.
I draw the line at one name bands.
Rock and roll Y'all!

Here are a few of my favorites.

These first 2 are more of an early morning coffee / sunrise genre for me.

Pachelbel's Cannon in D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOA-2hl1Vbc

Beethoven Ode to Joy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wod-MudLNPA

Then this is one of my favorites to listen to when first hitting the trail in the morning.

Grateful Dead Here Comes Sunshine 11/14/73 San Diego https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUYi_XSvA5o

Lastly I wanted to share a cut off of Bob Weir's new album Blue Mountain that I have really been enjoying. The whole album is great but I think that this song fits very well into the morning playlist. :)

Easy to note the transitioning in music which is in accord with the morning regimen.

Good offerings Hitch. Two beats added I was not aware, THX. Like the GD and Weir tracks. Prefer when the downloads are included in the post or when specific tracks are mentioned rather than an entire album. It becomes laborious to sort through all the suggestions.

Saltysack like that Crosby, Stills & Nash track followed up by SummerBreeze by Seals & Croft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsW8rXPcnM0 It's more of a meandering combo rather than appropriate for an immediate Warp 7 hit it hard and go Metallica/Iron Maiden blast off to the races scenario.

I love music, and I've tried many many times to listen to it while hiking and I just can't pull it off. I find I get super annoyed with the earbuds in my ears and the cord jangling around while I walk. Don't even try it anymore for fear of hurling my gear into the woods + weight savings and solves potential field repairs. hYOH to TEHO

That focus is too narrow. There's a whole other world beyond the Apple Chains.
And then there's Vivaldi. The 4 Seasons. Holst. The Planets. Wagner. Alpine Symphony.
Allman Brothers. Mountain Jam. Which leads to Derek and the Dominos. Layla. Which brings us to Eric Clapton's catalog.

Slim lighter wt iPod can actually save wt over having individual camera, mP3 player/music device, compass, GPS, hard maps, phone, watch/alarm clock, altitude watch, task lists, calculator, language translator, measurement conversions, etc et etc. Shoot the cordless phones and get ones that still allow outer environment noise to filter in. Protect this valuable piece though!

I rather like the choir of the birds, accompanied by the winds, and the drumming of grouse. What do you do when you get "I Write the Songs" stuck in your head for three hours straight?

My 20-something daughter disparages this as an '80s song, but I like to wake up to it: Beautiful Morning (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY-DY6dUDuA) by Ace of Base.

I see a number of inspirational and classical songs geared to get you up the next climb. Orff's Carmina Burana gets my blood flowing (and it is even more fun to perform it in front of thousands of people!). Here is a good recording of the first piece, O Fortuna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdIpoE2LEps), that is recognizable to most people.

I thought hiking was about the flora, fauna, geology, and Natural History of the Appalachian Mountains.

Why would you want to listen to music?

Carl

I don't use ear buds when I hike. For me I play music when I am hiking alone, and not likely to run into others, out of my phone speaker in areas where I want to make bears aware of my presence before I surprise them. And occasionally in camp when I'm bored

Anything by Nickel Creek, specifically Chris Thile (rhymes with feely), he's the most gifted soul ever to pick up a mandolin. He does impossible things with the instrument and can pull any feeling out of you he desires. He's that good. He has solo albums, collaborates with another bluegrass band called Punch Brothers, and has done jazz gigs with the virtuoso pianist Brad Mehldau...Stuff your MP3 player full of his stuff, it'll get you down the trail.

Good stuff!

Lately, I've been on a Stevie Ray Vaughn and Govt. Mule kick...great for a long run.

Funny, I was going to suggest the same! Think it's our age where we start out a little slow but eventually get up to speed?

Perhaps. I just know that I find the mounting energy very stimulating.
It puts in the proper frame of mind for In A Gadda Da Vida. I'm going to have to get a second battery for my MP3 player.

braveheart track, main theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBneQwzTRuU

Awesome! Back before Napster/LimeWire (which are dead now), YouTube Downloader (highly suggest getting that one!) and SiriusXM Recorder (you need to be a hardware geek but it records everything) I used to buy music. I've got two CDs of the braveheart stuff somewhere. I REALLY miss Cinemagic, it was an XM channel where they just played movie music scores. I've got a lot of stuff recorded off that channel.

Dances with wolves is a good one - any of the theme-type music works crossing balds. I kept thinking of it and the original Conan the Barbarian themes passing over the balds from Roan Highlands.
Mostly I like EDM, however. Anything Trance with flowing highs and a deep foot-stomping bass line.
Dash Berlin
Axwell/Ingrosso
Marcus Schultz
Above and Beyond
Armin Van Buuren

I generally record XM channels 52/53 and they have some great 60-90 minute radio shows. A State of Trance is sort of a louder, harder sound, and a State of Sundays has more easygoing down tempo stuff. Sunday nights they do slow easy stuff which works better for night time.

I have a decent amount of classic rock and death metal, but that's not so good for the trail.

In fact, most of the time I listen to nothing. I sort of like the peaceful quiet of my breath and the crunching leaves. But I'm also usually with a group hiking friends... and people like to talk before we spread out too much. If I were out there completely alone, I'd probably listen to more music.

While I don't often listen to music while walking, I often listen in the AM while packing and eating breakfast. I am a great fan of Walkin' Jim and two songs I find particularly fitting to get me in the proper, grateful mood each day, a mood that reminds me of how blessed I am, are the following:

Morning In The Mountains:

I Walk In Beauty:

TU Lyle for reminding us of Jin Walkin Stoltz. What an honor.

Walk in Beauty is one of my favorites. Love at about 55 secs in where he says "I realized I wasn't walking through beauty, I was walking in beauty...."

Some people miss that. I know I miss that at times.

Great way to start the day.

Jim Stolz connected rather than just walked through.

Lyle

Yes he did.

I was honored to see him in person on several occasions over the years. The last time I was one of the volunteers who took the tickets and sold his CD's at the concert. Got to chat with him for about a half hour or so, after the concert. Truly an inspiring man.

All of the photography was his own - very talented.

Dogwood

At 35 secs in Walk in Beauty he says something that is so key that can resonate us to a higher level concerning a realization of his 450 mile ID/MT border walk "it truly was a walk of thanksgiving."

That's so apt for the song title and the way he hiked.

When you talked to him did you get the sense that you were in the presence of a knowing, wise, loving, joyful, and humble being that transcended so much that is common?

Lyle

Oh, for certain. I realized that the first time I met him at an American Hiking Society Conference in 1985. He performed for us one evening. Ever since that conference, I was a fan.

Depending on the weather, it can change a whole lot.
If it's rainy/overcast, I'll listen to some spacey, slow music like The Hics or Milk and Bone.
If it's sunny out or I'm tired and need to wake up, I'll listen to some alternative indie stuff like Of Monsters And Men or Seafret. If I really need to get going, some nice trap music does the trick (Injury Reserve is pretty good, as is Desiigner)
