NC is nice without leaves on the trees, lots of awesome views. Like said above Roan is definitely worth waiting for the rhododendron bloom

I've only done in February....was beautiful but cold! Low teens....bring traction...http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161120/4d711eca8dc40c25094a007f455cd005.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161120/2239267de78d3e75bf5598d9e1b21c54.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161120/3798e225e67893aa541b1fd9016fd612.jpg

And, bonus, Roan in mid may.

I find it beautiful all the time. Note, however, that I went back to Roan a week after those June pictures were taken and most of the blooms were gone. Still green and pretty but not as striking.

Roan is worth it any time of year. Good climbs and the observation tower makes for nice views. Dont forget Natahala Ourdoor center and is not far and another great area to hike and watch professional Kayakers practice. BBQ and Beer nice way to end a several day hike. Lots and do and see in this area.

Save it. With the drought, falling temps, and high winds on the balds can make Roan Mtn wicked.

Keep an eye on http://appalachiantrail.org/home/explore-the-trail/trail-updates for updates.

Am I alone? I prefer the less than ideal conditions.....cold, snow adversity add to the adventure I seek!!!!

That ice is beautiful, but be careful!

We hiked north from Carver's Gap one afternoon in late February of this year. Moderate temperatures, clear-ish skies, a few inches of snow on the ground. We were a group of five on a dayhike to check out the terrain for a later trip.

Despite the forecast and the skies, it began snowing on us, a little, then more, then more. Wind blowing stinging sleet into our cheeks. Saw what we needed to see and turned back.

Running short on daylight, we were hurrying back to the car in the dusk. We descended from the bald summit and entered the woods as we neared the road, the woods that had an accumulation of ice/snow without benefit of sun. First step, and whoosh! Two of us down! Hard landing on my back - my head bounced on the ice! Hiker #3 managed to catch himself. Hikers #4 and 5 were some distance behind and didn't benefit from seeing us fall. When they got there, whoosh! Down they went in unison! Memorable for sure.

Ha...it took me nearly 15 hours to hike the 15 miles from Clyde Smith shelter to Overmountain shelter in February.....solid ice down from Roan Mtn shelter....busted my arse...I now keep 12 lil screws in winter kit...light weight traction that work...

A tip for sudden ice on trails is to hike off the trail a few feet. The softer terrain will not ice up like the hard packed ground and rocks will. Yes it is a bit more to walk through but it is a lot safer and quicker than navigating an ice trail without proper footwear.

The terrain going down Roan is to steep going off trail for the most part....I tried...
