Can someone recommend what type or better yet, a brand name bear hanging rope to purchase? Also, what length to buy? Thanks.

Get a ZPacks bear bag kit. Lightweight and includes everything you need. http://zpacks.com/accessories/bear_bag.shtml
If all you need is the rope, get 50' of slick line. 50' of rope is what I carry. Some carry less, but I like having the 50' in case of a high branch or cutting some off for gear repairs.

I have Z-Line I use with my food bag. I don't have the kit, just the line. I have put lots of miles on it and it is great stuff.

I use 50' of Technora 950, which is a smaller diameter than paracord, lighter, coated with teflon so it glides over branches, and has 950 lb rating. I store it wrapped around a 7" section of thin walled 3/4" pvc pipe - which I figure may come in handy for collecting water from some sources and keeps it from getting knotted/ tangled.
However, on my first morning last week, a freezing cold morning, I didn't retrieve it from the tree when I retrieved my food bag... and commenced to forget it until later that day when I was miles away. So a common sense tip: retrieve your food bag hanging cord when you retrieve your food bag in the morning, no matter how bad you want that first cup of coffee to warm you up.

To keep it away from your tent of course...
Much easier to hang the bear then to get the bear in one of those bear boxes, and I have never been able to fit a bear inside one of those bear canisters.

50' 550 paracord. Can't have too much of that stuff. I use that little bag tent stakes come in for the cord, caribiner and rocks.

The line Lawson sells is great stuff. Doesn't cut into tree limbs, stays relatively tangle free and is easy to tie.
Lawson cord is great. Just don't leave it in the tree like I did. I'm currently using some 7/64 Amsteel left over from rigging a hammock until I get more.
