Nice writeup. :)
Our last section of the year was done a few weeks ago. Next one isn't scheduled until March. Seems like the Trail should fade from my consciousness, the gear should be out of sight, the maps should be put away.
But no, like the author, I'm drawn by it. While I'm not hiking, I'm thinking about it.

Not sure that the diagram has anything to do with the story, but interesting to look at.

I hear ya. I'm thinking I need to do a longish hike down south next spring or summer. I'm way overdue. Nowhere near enough hiking last summer.

Only vaguely related. Just the idea of a transformative journey as universal metaphor. And the backpacker icon at the top.

I know that ice cream stand near Great Barrington, to which the author refers. I encountered it at the end of one of my section hikes, just as he did. I really relate to the guy's of the AT as a unifying theme, a lifelong pursuit.

Or when, after quitting his thru, he says, "The grind had gotten to me. And anyway, I knew I’d be back."The grind had gotten to me. And anyway, I knew I’d be back. - See more at: http://www.backpacker.com/trips/long-trails/appalachian-trail/hike-a-long-trail-even-if-it-takes-a-lifetime/#sthash.f5NX3qpL.dpuf
