I don't have a smart phone. So an app is out. But would really like to know what I am up against for the next day's hike. Would a GPS be advisable, and which do you all recommend?

AWOL guide is probably all you need. A paper map is also nice if you like to know what is around you on the trail.

Folks hiked the AT and harder trails for decades before GPS and smart phones were invented. Not needed. (But they can be fun to play with.)

You will never need a gps on the AT.

Off of it, is a different story.

Stay on trail and youll be fine.

A GPS isn't really great at showing you tomorrow's trail and hiking conditions. An elevation profile is much more useful -- it shows how much elevation the trail gains and loses per mile. The two main guidebooks have profiles, as do most of the maps.

Do you need a GPS? No. Hundreds of thru-hikes have occurred without GPS or similar devices.

No! Nope!!
Just a guide with trail profiles and info on food, lodging, etc.

I find the GPS is useful in town to help find places or services.

The Gunthook AT app has become very popular as it will pin point your exact location and show how far you've gone and how far it is to go to the next POI. It has the topo for the immediate area around the trail and the profile.

Of course, you don't actually NEED that, but sure is nice to have.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Thru Hiker's Companion guidebook is all I use for planning.

More like, thousands. Simple answer to OP's question is no. Get some decent maps, or at at the very least AWOL's guide which has profiles, waypoints, road crossings, etc.
