Anyone have experience with "Appalachian Ultralight" packs? The brand, not the genre.

The owner is a great guy. From what I've seen, it's high quality stuff. The next pack I buy will be from them.

Yes. I received an advanced 2017 pack a few weeks back and have been using often. It's frameless, weighs 13oz and carried up to 15lbs comfortably for me. What I really like is on the version I have, the front of the pack is split into two: a mesh pocket and lashing straps.

What does "near waterproof" mean...other then the obvious?

It looks like capehiker's pack is Robic rather than Cuben 2.92. The website calls out the 45L Robic at 15.75oz. That's still a very nice pack for $220 and less than a pound, if you can deal with the weight limitation, webbing for a hip belt and less waterproof than Cuben.

ZPacks offers a custom Cuben pack called The Zero that if you option it out identically, comes in just below the price and just above the weight specs of AUL Cuben 45L, but comes with taped seams...you can also substitute a padded hipbelt and some other cool options on the Zero...but...you have to promise not to open the shipping packet with a knife. The sharpest thing you can use is your teeth, OK? http://www.zpacks.com/backpacks/zero.shtml
