A while back I was laying in my hammock, cogitating about knots, and how I typically only tie slippery type knots when I'm out on the trail. I wondered if the Spike in the Marlin Spike Hitch was totally necessary, and experimented with a "spike-less" alternative. Here's a video explaining my thought process and results.

I've hung several times, incuding two overnights, now without using a spike as shown in the video. I'm officially spike free. Two less things to carry (or find) while out on the trail. Ditch the spike!
