Is there any particular type of silicone lubricant that I should use for this? Does it have to be food grade or anything like that?

Yes, the o-ring must be lubed. Yes, they recommend MSR Silicone Lubricant.

But, you can also use lip balm or petroleum jelly(vasoline)

Your manual would have told you so....

I used lip balm on mine before a trip in September. Worked perfectly. Stands to reason that anything that goes on your lips will be ok around drinking water.

Being petroleum based based, vasoline would not normally be recommended for o-rings as it is likely to contribute to increased rate of deterioration.
As mentioned elsewhere, aside from silicon grease, chap-stick/lip balm works quite well when one is not otherwise prepared.

Petroleum jelly is manufacturer approved for lubrication of o-rings, it says so right in the owner's manual that I posted the link to.

And...ummmm.....look at the ingredients on your lip balm...chances are you will find "petrolatum" on it If you do, you have petroleum jelly. Which, isn't a bad thing. Seriously.
