Now that's a text book success story there, "he was measured and had the gen essentials" glad he made it.

Glad he was prepared and knowledgeable. I know his family is too!

I guess not all day-hikers are unprepared fools. (There's another thread that started dissing day-hikers, so I stopped reading it.) Good for him!

It wasn't the thread dissing day hikers, but one specific poster doing so.

Snow caves are much warmer than tents, he made a good decision to stop and obtain shelter and fire. Adding 2 trash bags or a emergency bivy would be a nice addition to the essentials kit.

Hard to believe you can survive the night, in winter, at altitude without a 45# base weight pack.

No emoticons here, can't tell if you're serious or not.

With a good, dry down garment, a bivy, some skill and a cool head (perhaps most important!), a well-provisioned day hiker should be able to survive sub-zero F conditions overnight. Not in comfort, but survive. A zero F quilt (just over a pound) would make it almost comfortable.
