Does anyone use this as their primary rain jacket? Or is mostly only adequate enough for a windshell?

It's a wind shell, why would you use it as a rain jacket. The material is the same as the sleeping bag outer. It's not waterproof or water resistant it just helps stop the loss of heat through wind. I have had one for over 2 years and it's great for the purpose it was intended.

It seems like it might be a good option for summer time hiking. I dont really wear my rainjacket during summer showers anyway.

It'll work especially if you use an umbrella. I would only do so in consistent warm weather conditions when I would rather walk through the rain with no rain coat than sweat my arse off under one.

I would mostly use it to keep me warm and not keep me bone dry

I use a Houdini as my primary/only "rain gear" in Summer. Oh, and a trucker hat. A lot of times I won't even bother putting the Houdini on. My point is, the Zpacks wind jacket could be enough outerwear for you in the Summer. In my experience, rain gear isn't necessary in the Summer.

In cold weather, I like the Houdini over a mid weight fleece, under a Packa. With a UL down jacket at the ready for breaks and camp.

I know you asked about Zpacks, but the Houdini is same idea I think.

Even though there's a C6 DWR on the Ventum Wind shell it absolutely wets out. It wetted out in 15 mins in a short duration cloudburst in med heavy rain even being new.

Basically, Im trying to decide if I can ditch my actual rain shell in the summer and bring something like the houdini or the zpacks windshell instead

Im sure with the right layering system and weather conditions it would be fine. I want something that is more dynamic and weighs less than the 15 oz shell Im carrying now

How about the Z-packs rain jacket instead of the windshell? I use one.

Ideally thats what I would do. But I wasnt wanting to spend $300 without being able to put my hands on one first.

Also the Zpacks rain jackets are sold out until new fabric comes in. I recently inquired and was told probably at the end of February.
