Hey folks. I've been pretty quiet on here lately, but I just wanted to make myself available again for questions and comments regarding the Guthook's Guides apps (we recently renamed the overall company Atlas Guides and made a new website, but Guthook is still the name on our most popular apps and, of course, my trailname).

The three of us here have been hard at work on updating the apps and adding new trail systems in places far and wide (from New Zealand to Scotland to the Canadian Rockies). My personal focus is on the Appalachian Trail and the White Mountains, but between the three of us working directly on the apps and the many people we're partnering with, we've got quite a bit of ground covered.

So check out the new website (http://www.atlasguides.com) and updated apps if you haven't already, and let me know what you think. If you want to get my attention, email is best ([email protected] is our general email line), and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/guthookhikes) is second best, but I'll be checking in on here from time to time as well.

Happy trails,
Guthook

Thanks Guthook! We're getting ready to install and buy the AT sections. We have the AWOL guide, and the only question I have is how redundant is Guthook with our AWOL, meaning how much extra info is in Guthook vs. AWOL, other than showing where we currently are and how far we currently are to water/camps/shelters/towns/roads/etc. I'm considering only buying a section or two first and seeing how much we use it before buying the rest of the trail.

Can't say enough good things about your apps...I've used JMT, Collegiate loop, several AT sections, FT sections and hope to use for CT thru....should have just bought entire CT first time....great tool and seldom ever use paper guides......A Must BUY IMO!!!

Hey Rob, thanks for checking it out. AWOL and I have shared information between our guides for the past few years, and we try to keep things matched up in order to not have confusing mismatched info. The app has more individual waypoints in general because there's more space to keep them on the map (don't have to worry about adding extra pages), and AWOL has great at-a-glance info on the databook/elevation pages. I think the two supplement each other quite well. I'd suggest playing around with the app to get a feel for it. If you feel like you want to buy the whole package after buying one or two sections, send me an email and I'll get you set up with the rest of the package for the thru-hiker special price.

Aw shucks. Thanks Salty. But I definitely advocate using paper guides as well ;-)
And remember, the purchase is for life, so if you hike sections later on, you'll still have the updated trail info. All the more reason to hike the CT more than once!

I love my Guthook AT app on my smartphone! I do carry maps, Awol's AT Guide (paper version), and the ALDHA companion (though I have YET to learn how to extract and print to pdf file only the pages I need for a particular section! ARGH) as backup on my phone.

I love that Guthook will show me where I am (both birds-eye AND elevation profile!), how far it is to this or that (though ONLY if the thing is right on the trail (ARGH ... why not give distance to shelters that are even the least bit off the trail, or to the turn-off to them, I'll never know!), AND allows me to text my wife my pin-point location (so long as I have service for texts).

THANKS for the app, now fix that distance defect so it will show all AT shelters, not just those no more than 10 centimeters from the footpath. ;)

I'm not following what you mean by this. The birds eye shows shelters off the trail using a blue connector line as the trail.

Haha. No problem Rainman. Can you give me an example of which shelters aren't showing up for distance? And are you using iPhone or Android, just in case there's a bug causing that? I generally keep a mile number for each shelter even if it's off trail, but I'm sure I've missed a few here and there :-)

Guthook, I am planning to hike Long trail this year(I already finished the A.T. and want to do the same for the long trail). I guess I have been spoiled by the amount of info on the town on the A.T. for lodging and resupply. I purchased the Long Trail end to end guide and was disappointed in the maps and town info compared to the A.T. guides. How in-depth is the town info in your long trail app. for the towns north of Maine junction. I am most interested in Stowe and waitsfield (I do plan to purchase your app in any event. Thanks.

Contacted you with a problem I had last fall with the AT app on a section hike. The map would show my exact location but would say that I was xx miles from the AT. Y'all asked me to send a screen shot, but by then I was off the trail. Was I the only one with this issue? Will have a new phone for my thru this year so hopefully no more problems. I will say it is an awesome app and most other hikers I ran into had it!

Hey Bob. I don't have any town info in the Long Trail guide at this point. I'm finishing up some work on the town guide for the AT, but haven't gone further north in Vermont. One thing I've found with the LT is that with so few hikers compared to the AT, there aren't really any trail towns in the same vein as almost any part of the AT, and not really any businesses that I know of that reach out to LT hikers in the same way. I haven't looked at the End-to-Enders guide in many years, but I remember it being a fairly accurate representation of what was useful in those towns-- Stowe and Waitsfield, are both basically ski resort towns with lots of restaurants and not much in the way of cheap lodging, and probably the busiest towns you'll see in that section of the trail.

I think we talked with some folks from the NCTA a while back. If my memory serves me right, they didn't have data that we needed for an app and the project was shelved until later. We did get something going with the Ice Age Trail Alliance, if you're looking for something in your neck of the woods, though.

I don't recall seeing that again, but I'm always happy to help if it happens. I've been testing the app a little more frequently in NH for the past few months, and I've been making plenty of little tweaks. Hopefully that took care of it :-)

We had talked a while ago about working on a Southeast hiking trails app kind of like how I've got one going for New England as a regional one. Maybe it's time to start revisiting that idea... I'd have to find a local group to manage the app data for the area, since I can't take on any more mapping projects myself. Anyway, there are a ton of great trails in the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, etc. that could work out with an app.

Hi Guthook,

I'm thinking of using an app for my CDT thru-hike in a few years. I haven't seen too much in regards to the CDT app. Will the CDT app tell the places where permits are needed? Who to contact? Etc.

Also, some of the newer GPS handheld systems have really become pretty high speed. Are you aware of any GPS system the app will work on? I only ask because there have been several places I have hiked where a cell phone just would not work due to the weather.

To answer the second question first, I've never tried the Garmin Monterra, but that is a Garmin handheld that runs Android, so I assume it can run our Android app. Otherwise, it's just Android and iOS phones and tablets that can run these apps.

As for the CDT, we work with Bear Creek Survey and the CDTC to get the info for that app, and I don't usually check that one out. I just took a look and see we have the permitting info for the National Parks (Glacier and Yellowstone), but I'll ask about anything further. I'm pretty sure anything else that's necessary could be quickly sought out on the CDTC website, though.

I just downloaded the section north of GSMNP for a possible hike there this spring. Used it for the north half of SNP. One feature that would be nice is to be able to mannually set your position. Could be useful for planning. I could set my destination at the trailhead and see how far away way points will be. Also when hiking if your GPS isn't getting good reception but you know where you are according to the map or waypoint you could update your position. If this is already possiblr, I can't figure it out.

I emailed Guthook after seeing this post - Inquiring about the feasibility of having an app for some parks and areas instead of a linear trail..GSMNP, BSF, Pisgah etc. He replied back quickly and said that there was talk of this, but to include these areas under 1 app called "Southeast", where within the app you could purchase a GSMNP map, A Pisgah Map...And I would foresee an umbrella purchase as with the other long distance hiking apps. News of this was very exciting to me as now that I am complete on the AT up to Duncannon and out of weekend hiking I have ventured out into other areas and quickly found how handy the Guthooks app of the AT was over the years. I really hope the Southeast app comes to fruition.

Thanks! Yes, updates are automatic after purchase. If you switch from iPhone to Android or vice versa, purchases don't transfer automatically (since Google and Apple don't exactly like to honor each others' store purchases), but you can email us in that case and we'll hook you up.

Hey Odd Man Out. Thanks for the suggestion-- the closest we have to that right now is the route drawing feature, where you can draw a custom route with a start point anywhere on the trail. As you draw it, mileage numbers for waypoints change to reflect where on that route they are. But that doesn't do everything you suggested there. I'll put a "simulated location" option on my to-do list. I can't guarantee we'll get to it soon, but many of the features in the app already originally started as requests like this!

Hi Guthook, I thru hiked the LT last year and have used your app on the AT in NH, VT, MA & CT. I really like your app and give it very high marks. I use an Iphone and really have not had any issues. I particually like the location - distance to/ from function, elevation along with the comments. On the LT, I found that hitching into town was much more difficult the furthur north you go. The GMC, E2E guide was helpful for information about town services but contained quite a few errors, mostly outdated info due to closings or in one case a fire.

Thanks, Migrating Bird! Glad to hear you got some good use out of the app :-)

I was also very surprised at how hard hitchhiking was on the northern part of the LT when I hiked it in 2012. I figured, at the very least, that hitching near the smaller hippie-college towns like Johnson would be easy, but three of the four hitches I got on the whole trail took almost an hour each! Maybe I just smelled really bad...

I'm thinking that, rather than a full town guide for the northern towns on the LT, I may at least make a waypoint for each "major" town, just so that people can leave comments about what they find there. Most of the northern towns don't have much in the way of hiker services, especially cheap places to stay. But a good Internet connection can at least give hikers an easy way to check the most recent info.

So I'm checking out the Comments in the AT app for locations in CT and they all date back to 2016. Is there anything I need to do to get 2017 data? It looks like my Waypoints were last updating in Sept 2016. How do I get that to refresh?

The 2017 data is usually based on information garnered during 2016. Guthook does do a great job of updating his app as new data comes in. Even paper data is done the same way (ie AWOL's AT Guide and the ALDHA AT Thru-Hikers' Companion). Both AWOL and the ALDHA post updates and corrections on their websites.

This past weekend I have had trouble with the app (iOS). It happened in the profile view with GPS enabled. Moving and resizing become sluggish to impossible (wouldn't move), so I could not select anything outside my viewing area (to get distances to it), and also it was sometimes unresponsive to even stuff within my view.

That makes sense about the 2016 vs 2017 data. But I still am concerned I'm not seeing any user "Comments" more recent than 2016. Unless it is really the case that no one has posted a comment in 9 months, but that seems unlikely to me.

Tom, the app refreshes trail data automatically, and I was about to say that I haven't gotten enough updates for that section to send anything new recently, but I just realized that's not true. The Android app has had some issues recently with updating waypoints and tracks, but it will refresh if you go into the Trail Selector screen and hit the refresh button. If you have trouble with that, email us: [email protected]

I haven't seen anything about how useful this program is when you don't have cellular data access. My Android phone comes with an economy plan and uses WiFi data almost exclusively, with cellular data really only for emergencies (first byte costs $20, and once you get started you have to agree to automatic credit card charges in $20 increments). So I'll be able to get data along the AT in towns with available WiFi, but nothing beyond GPS position while on the trail itself. How does the program work when the last update was a few days prior?

Assuming all Guthook Apps are the same... (I've only used the JMT version)

You download the maps and info and then use the GPS embedded with your phone for navigation, no cellular or wifi data needed.

However, I learned while on the JMT that when you power up your phone, it can take as much as 15 minutes for the phone's GPS to get a fix on your position when it doesn't have access to cell towers or a wifi.
(The GPS system can pinpoint your location quicker when it knows your general location base on the known location of the cell tower or wifi).

The apps are designed specifically for use without an internet connection. As long as you have wifi at the start to download the initial data set, and occasionally thereafter for updates, you're good to go. All data is stored on the phone for offline use.

That's a feature we're working on for next year. Basically, we didn't originally want to get into competing with Garmin or Trimble or things like that, so we're mainly focused on "trail guide that uses GPS location" rather than "GPS device for mapping". We're moving slowly in the direction of having more mapping uses in the apps, but having functional trail guides is still our top priority.

Assuming all Guthook Apps are the same...
Sssshh! Don't let the cat out of the bag! ;-)

That's pretty impressive! It does definitely take longer to pinpoint your location when you're in deep mountain valleys, or it's been longer since you last had the GPS on, but 15 minutes sounds pretty excessive. Even at the bottom of the Grand Canyon a few years ago I got a decent GPS fix in just a few minutes. Environmental variables are always a factor, though. Pretty crazy!

The typical delay was 5 minutes, with occasional delays of about 10 minutes.
There were only a few times when it took a full 15 minutes.

Using the Guthook app on the JMT was the first time I think I had ever tried using the phone as a GPS unit outside of cell range. So I was initially surprised when it would take the app longer than a minute to tell me where I was.

But then I realized why my smart phone would usually locate itself faster after a power up than my Garmin GPS unit... Goggle is using what it knows about the location of wifi signals and cell towers the phone can "see" to instantly determine an approximate location of the phone. It then uses that information to rapidly get the GPS unit to pinpoint it's location.

But when the phone can't see any wifi signals or cell towers, it has to "start from scratch" at trying to determine where it's located... and that takes longer.

There were a few times I blamed the app for the delay. Could never figure out a discernible pattern, but there were times where it seemed like there were a few minutes of delay between the time I would fire up the app and the OS would display the 'location' tray icon indicating the phone was trying to determine it's location.

Unless you were in a weird area or the satellites were in a very poor position or you have a ***** phone this should not be the case. Although if you haven't used the phone in a while it will need to download the sat data which takes time, more if it misses a cycle or two.

I've been using the Mammoth Tracks app for the Ice Age Trail and I have to say it's fantastic. The only suggestion I could make is to include information on the blue trails that come off of the IAT. We hiked the Chippewa Lobe this weekend, and the IAT Guidebook has all the information about it, but Mammoth Tracks only shows the campsites with no trail going to or coming from them. I'm assuming that the information is coming from the IATA, who publishes the guidebook, so I would think it would be relatively easy to add this information.

In the grand scheme, my gripe is pretty small. The app is fantastic and makes hiking the IAT much more enjoyable and simplifies a lot of my planning. It's easily the best money I've spent on this hobby. Keep up the great work.

Hey Cory. I'm glad you like it. We partner with the IATA on this one, so all of the data comes from them. They do plan on adding more side trails and waypoints over time, but it can be a little bit of a slow process. For the IATA staff, it's been kind of a side project on top of their previous duties. We're pretty happy that they're dedicated to the ongoing process of keeping the app updated, though. Keep an eye out for continued improvements :-)

I'm super impressed by your responsiveness on this board! Thanks for the great customer support!

While I'm here, let me throw out a request to get the rest of New England into the New England Hiker app :) Despite rumors to the contrary, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island are in New England too :P

All teasing aside, I'd love to see the New England Trail, the Midstate Trail, and the North South Trail included just to get a couple of trails from the other states on the list. There are of course many, many more.

I hiked 745M of the PCT this year. Big snow, nasty stream crossing, and my back flaring up (had back surgery on 2/7/17) caused me to abort my thru-hike attempt. I had Guthook's app, Halfmile's app, and Hikerbot app on my phone. My phone must have been a piece of s**t phone. 90% of the time, it wouldn't plot my location on any of those apps. (Straight Talk Samsumg E5 android phone using Verizon network). I used Guthooks for reverence material. If I had a critical navigational problem, I would try to be with another hiker that had Guthooks app that actually worked or plot my UTM coordinates on my paper Halfmile maps. It was quite frustrating. I had several 'nerd-types' tinker with my phone to see if they could fix it. Never happened.

You're very welcome! I took a looooong break from Whiteblaze in the past several years, and I'm still getting used to being "social" again. I try to keep an eye on the boards here in case anyone is trying to reach me :-)

Massawhat? Never heard of it ;-)

I have a lot of excuses for that, but I won't bore you too much with them right now. The main thing is that I want to finish the White Mountains first, since they're the big draw for most of the big hiking in New England (not to mention a shorter drive for me!). There's also the issue of how much time we're spending on adding new trails vs upgrading the core of the apps. I'm leaning more toward the programming these days, which leaves less time for mapping trails... I'd love to work with AMC or other regional trail organizations on apps for the trails they already work on, but it has been difficult, to say the least, to get their attention (or to keep it once I have it). Long story short, I'll keep working on it, and hopefully real soon when I have some more time I'll make a big push to add some trails in the other parts of the region. I'm actually pretty interested in the Berkshires as a next project...

Carl, I'm not too familiar with Android phones (I'm the iPhone guy for our apps), but if you send us an email, Alice (the Android guru) can see if she can help you out. Email is: [email protected]

Considering none of the apps on your phone were working with your location, it's gotta be the phone that was the problem (they all use the same GPS), but maybe there's something in the settings that we can figure out.

Not sure if anyone has asked for this before. I love the route planning on the app but would love to be able to edit a saved route rather than have to delete and start over. Thanks

Funny thing-- the only person who has requested that before is me. I made that request to myself, over and over again. I need to actually get on that soon. Thanks for the reminder. I sometimes get distracted by trying to work on too many projects at once :-) I haven't looked at the technical side of editing saved routes in a while, so I'm not sure how long it will take to get it working, but... hopefully soon.

Hopefully Guthook or someone can set me straight on whats going on: a couple years ago I purchased Guthooks AT Guide 4. It seemed to offer map sections that could be purchased seperately(or at least guides that offered other areas)

At the time I was interested in the SNP area so purchased Nor. Virginia thinking I'd buy other areas as desired. This year I wanted to checkout the MD and PA areas so went to the app to buy another area only to find no in app purchase option then looking in the APP store, no more mention of AT "x"series guides but I did find the "new" AT guide which DOES have the extra sections available. My question am I stuck with two apps or buying the same area guide again for the new APP? Or is there a way to move the data?

I will second that emotion. Recently moved from iPhone to Android and their support folks hooked me up fast with codes needed to get access to previously purchased maps in the new app. They definitely support what they sell!

I advise you to not leave home without testing the app. Go into Airplane Mode and make sure the route and topo is in place before you leave. I have gotten to the woods a couple of times without the map working. It may have been user error but I've always just pulled it up with no issue. Just an FYI.

G'day Guthook, Great to see you are still adding to the list of trails when are you coming to Australia to do some of the walks here? You will enjoy it just bring thick canvas gaiters for the wriggly sticks.

I loved the app on the AT this year and will certainly be using it for my second effort next year.
