I was planning on a few nights out this spring and only plan on taking a foot print poles and fly since it will be to cold middle of April and few bugs. Hot springs area. My question is what has been your experience with this combination? Looking to reduce weight of tent.

Shouldn't be a problem. As long as it isn't pouring rain you will be fine.

There could definitely be bugs out by then.

a bathtub floor would protect you in a heavy downpour better than a footprint. Check out these guys. Great floors and not too much money...

what's your tent? I've done the fast-fly set up with my Quarterdome a few times and the setup takes some practice.

I have a Mountainsmith Celestial/Morrison 2 person. I have practiced the set up using only the fly, I used a tie on the top of the poles where they cross, without the tie they have a tendency to separate. I also staked out the two vestibules. The fly, appears to cover the entire footprint, and is low enough to provide adequate rain protection.
