Not that I'm thru hiking in 2017, but curious why accessing Katharine in some other way this year (if needed) is any different than any other trail reroute heretofore?! Baxter State Park may not be making any new friends this year because of this, but 2017 thrus shouldn't dwell too long on this IMHO
I don't know if my wife would be too thrilled with me accessing Katharine...no matter how I went about doing it. ;)

Leaving Katherine aside, plenty of late season thru hikers either flip up to Baxter to get the summit out of the way prior to park closing (or early winter weather). Alternatively they have a friend pick them up and take a couple of day break and just go day hike Katahdin. I routinely drive up from the whites in about 4.5 hours and there are plenty of places to stay in Millinocket or just outside the park. All you need to do is get a DUPR if its weekend or just wait until after labor day.
