View Full Version : Ursack S29 AllWhite is...ALL white

I'm looking forward to using my new Ursack, but I also expect it's going to go from All White to All Dirty fairly easily.

Now I know that a dirty food sack isn't the worst of things, but I do wish it was made a little darker so that the dirt wouldn't look so...dirty.

So my question to anyone who knows: Can you dye an Ursack, or does the material resist color?

From the source
http://www.ursack.com/wordpress/shortcodes/:

The S29 AllWhite is Spectra 29, but there is no green coating. Spectra cannot be dyed. Its native color is white. We used to coat it green, but that added weight and made it harder to cinch tight. Ursack is washable.

Well that settles that. Thanks; I didn't see that on their site.

Never really thought about it and I'm not a neatness freak. I suppose you could put a light trash bag over it. I was planning on putting a trash bag inside to keep my stuff dry. Outside would keep my stuff dry and shed some dirt.
Kinda defeats the point of playing in the woods. [emoji106][emoji3][emoji41]

Spectra is just UHMW polyethylene. Native color is white.
It cant be dyed with water based dye....because it doesnt absorb water.

However...you can get polyethylene in various colors, so they could make it in colors, just choose not to. Or colorants might adversely affect desired properties.

To dye it you probably could with an organic solvent soluble dye , which the PE is slightly soluble in, like toluene, xylol, etc, warm temps, and exposure short enough not to damage the PE fibers. Not something youd want to bother with.

Yeah, that sounds like work. I'll just learn to enjoy it dirty. To be honest, after a few days, I'M the one who's dirty and the food bag won't matter to me at all.

So does this mean that it won't get heavy and soggy after spending a night in the rain? I'm planning to put a grocery store plastic bag over it at night anyway, but that would be interesting to know.

How about an odor proof bag ? Less smell less critters

I already use an OPSack, and it will be inside the Ursack. I'm anxious to start using the Ursack because I find it next to impossible to hang my food properly.

Mine has sat out in the rain many nights, the material doesn't absorb water..which also means if you leave it upright during rain water will collect inside. I'm anal about keeping my equipment pristine and I have no problems throwing this on the ground. I don't throw it in the mud, but dirt, leaves, and such are no problem. It will discolor but you can easily clean it.

Then an Ursack is the way to go. If it gets dirty, it washes easy enough in a washing machine with the rest of your clothes. My gf has washed her half a dozen times. It still keeps critters out of her food. Have yet to see a bear try to get into it.

Hang it in the shower. Hose it down.
Why speculate about rain?
