Hmmmm, that all depends really on what ya like to listen to i would assume. Not sure if my taste in music may match with yours.
Just finished topping off my shuffle for the hike...46 hours of tunes and a little George Carlin. I like a really varied mixture and with over 600 songs, no one artist accounts for more than 10 of them. Having said that, here's just a few artists who in my opinion, are great to have along on the trail.
Government Mule (Nothing beats Warren busting out with Soulshine when the weather sucks)
Stevie Ray Vaughan
George Thorogood
James Taylor (yeah, I know...)
America
Maybe that'll get you started.

Lord Huron has several songs that seem like they were written with thru-hiking in mind... Meet Me in the Woods and others.

If you like to sing along to your tunes, but can't do it well, you can't go wrong with the Barry Manilow collection. Guaranteed to reduce shelter population by 40% on its own, tone deaf sing along increases that to 73%.

I like Trance and Ambient EDM - white noise with a beat. Plus there are many hours of it for free download on Amazon.

Currently loading up my MP3 player for my thru hike with Metallllll.
You want to do 20 miles a day, listen to Gabriel and Rodriguez, try 11:11 or Area 52
I like Joe Bonamassa to walk to, especially his acoustic stuff, Live at Vienna Opera house is my favorite - plenty of walking rhythms

I was thinking more along the lines of a Bose Speaker Inna Hat, producing 73 decibels and having a 12-day battery.
Here is my current lifesoundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f49Zhg4vLjg
Download with Tubemate, convert to mp3.

Another Massive Attack fan here (that's right, a 60+ old white guy who blasts rap music), but I mix it up with Beatles, Zeppelin, Pentangle, Koop, James Brown, Stevie Ray, Steely Dan, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Zero 7, NPR, and a bunch of others.

Excellent suggestion. I still have yet to check out their newest album. Adding that to the list.
I am mostly metal as well, but I will be listening to a wide range of stuff on the trail. Anything with a good, solid drum beat that's good to get into a nice walking rhythm with.
Hope you're using ear buds.

Yep, I have earbuds. However, I am debating on bringing a speaker for when I camp alone or if I get stormed into my tent for a few hours, so I don't HAVE to wear the earbuds if rain is drowning it out for the next closest person. Unless some impromptu shelter karaoke happens (well before hiker midnight)... I'd be happy to provide the song on the speaker.
